If the Pats kept him, he would cost $5M in real money and $5M in salary cap room. That's a lot to pay a guy who is a stop-gap.

I'm frequently wrong, but I think Brown's role in the offense was reduced after he started playing both ways. That doesn't change the fact that the receiving corps in NE stepped into the role, but it does speak volumes about Brown that he reduced his role to help the team, at the cost of his own job. I suppose he still has his three Super Bowl rings to keep him company.
