Here's the difference: Harry Reid was making an honest attempt to praise Barack Obama, a person he thought could win the presidency, as a crossover candidate with appeal. While Reid's observation was dead on and accurate, in my opinion, his choice of words were poorly chosen and ill conceived.

Trent Lott on the other hand supported Strom Thurmond, a segrationist candidate who thought America would be a better place without blacks, has all sorts of negative implications for the country and particularly African-Americans. Trent Lott openly mused about the possibility of Thurmond's presidency being good for America. Completely different context.
