Ironically Shannahan was doing a hell of a job with Running Back by committee during his final year in Denver. Check it out for yourself.
Denver Broncos Statistics - NFL Football - ESPN
In short 1,800+ yards with a 4.8 ypc with the bulk of that yardage coming from four different player. I was under the impression that Shannahan had lost his touch with his plug and play running game but according to his 2008 stats in Denver that wasn't the case.
Denver Total Rushing Yardage:
2009 - 1,752 with a 4.2 ypc (first year without Shannahan)
2008 - 1,862 with a 4.8 ypc
2007- 1,957 with a 4.6 ypc.
2006 - 2,152 with a 4.4 ypc
2005 - 2,539 with a 4.7 ypc
2004 - 2,333 with a 4.4 ypc
2003 - 2,629 with a 4.8 ypc (Portis last year in Denver)
Washington Same Time Frame: (just for comparisons sake)
2009 - 1,444 with a 3.9 ypc
2008 - 2,095 with a 4.4 ypc
2007 - 1,871 with a 3.8 ypc
2006 - 2,216 with a 4.5 ypc
2005 - 2,183 with a 4.2 ypc
2004 - 1,765 with a 3.7 ypc
2003 - 1,653 with a 3.9 ypc (lol Spurrier)
Main thing I notice about Shannahan's teams were that the ypc average never dipped below 4.4 ypc
