because in practice and training camp when the offense is running you want your backup running the backup offense or watching and participating with the offense, not working on special teams. I don't see why this is so hard for everyone to understand. A kicker needs to practice too. A kicker needs a holder. Why pull a guy who's one injury away from LEADING the offense, and practically the team, away from learning the offense to hold for the freaking kicker...
Its much smarter that special teams guys practice as much as they can together, especially in this age of the specialists.
