Re: my latest draft thoughts

Here are all the Day One draft picks for the Bears on defense in the Blache era:

Russell Davis-DT North Carolina
Brian Urlacher-LB New Mexico
Mike Brown-S Nebraska
Dustin Lyman-LB Wake Forest
Roosevelt Williams-CB Tuskeegee
Michael Haynes-DE Penn State
Charles Tillman-CB Louisiana Lafeyette
Lance Briggs-LB Arizona

Obviously the Bears did not put any particular premium on DBs while he was the coordinator there. I don't know how much draft influence he had, but it looks like they started in the front seven and tried to complete it with DBs, or at the very least spread the picks around the defense.

The success rate was a mixed bag. Urlacher, Brown, Briggs, and Tillman became the foundation of the great Bears defense of this decade. Williams, Haynes, Davis, and Lyman made zero impact in the league.

While I generally agree with Blache's assessment that Corners are the staple of any pass defense (and the importance of pass d trumps that of run d, that much we know), it doesn't help if you spend a high draft pick on a corner who is misvalued (thanks, Carlos).

I know you don't particularly advocate the value of corners, and are just going off what Blache says, but I don't think that statement makes it likely that the Skins will use a first round pick on a Corner unless the guy they want drops to them.
