Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
Fassel's Record:
Fassel began his career with Assistant coaching stints with Utah State Univ. and Stanford Univ. Working with John Elway at Stanford. Also HC at Utah State. Long record of Offensive success, tutored Phil Sims and John Elway. Assistant with AZ, DEN, NYG, and Oakland. During Fassel's time as HC at NYG, his teams were known for numerous post-season runs in December, and for winning big games, such as the previously unbeaten Den. in 1998. 1997 NFL coach of the year, he resurected the career of K. Collins, and received acclaim for his "playoff guarantee" during the 2000 season, in which he led the NYG to an improbable SB appearance.
However, his legacy as HC is mixed, Fassel's Giants were known for their disapointments against inferior teams during the regular season, as well as in the POs. The most notable loss was a shocking 39-38 loss to the 49ers in the '02 postseason, in which they blew a 38-14 third Quarter lead. During the '03 season, injuries decimated the NYG, and he was fired amidst some controversy.
Before the 2003 season, Fassel, and his wife Kitty, were reunited with their son, John Mathieson, who they had given up for addoption in 1969. The couple was unmarried when he was born.
Critics of Fassel have pointed out his lack of success in two seasons with the B-More Ravens. The Ravens had been near the bottom of the league in offense for both the '04 & '05 seasons.
On Oct. 17, 2006, it was announced that Fassel was fired from his Ravens OC post.
In '04, and '05, Jim & Kitty Fassel owned a Quizno's restaurant in Denville NJ, their son Brian was in charge of day-to-day operations. The store was sold in April '05, but still remains open.
While coaching the NYG, Fassel and his wife resided in Ho-Ho-Kus NJ.
Fassel current serves as as color coordinator on NFL Westwood One broadcasts.
