While his body is still alive, the fear is that he is brain-dead or brain-damaged. If it's the former, eventually they will take him off life support. If it's the latter, he's got a lot of rehab ahead of him and he may never be the same. Regardless, I think you are right. If it were a complete rupture, he would have bled out completely within a few minutes and we wouldn't even be having this discussion. I certainly hope he pulls through.
