Crestone Needle sits on the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and is 14,197 feet high. The standard route is a class 3, and the elevation gain and distance vary depending on where you begin hiking.
There is 2WD access to the mountain, however, there is a 5 mile jeep trail that begins where that ends. The jeep trail is supposedly one of the roughest in the state of Colorado, and it gets a little worse every year. There are big rocks, trees, pockets, mud and 3 creeks to cross. It took us almost 2 hours to drive up it, and it steadily gets worse all the way up. From the end of the jeep trail, the total elevation gain to the peak is about 3,300 feet, and the distance is about 9 miles round-trip.
