I used to ride without a helmet when I was younger. But I will not get on a bike with out one now.
A few years back my friend’s dad was out camping in the desert with his Family like they did ever year for the 4th. One afternoon he decided to take his little grandson for a ride around the camp site. He wasn't going more then 15 to 20 mph. Some how the bike tipped over and he hit his head on the hard dirt. His grandson wasn't scratched but he suffered severe brain damage and died a week later never regaining consciousness. If he had been wearing his helmet everyone would have been laughing about it. But he wasn’t,this was a guy that road motor cycles all his life so he knew how to ride. He was in his 50's so it's not like he was some senior citizen ridding around either.
I think it should be the rider’s choice unlike California. But you never know what might happen so why take the chance. It’s not that hard to wear a helmet.

See, that's what scares me. I ride around my house with no helmet (there is no law requiring helmets here), but I always felt that if I crashed at a low speed, it wouldn't hurt me. Well...wouldn't destroy my head anyway. But I keep hearing stories about people at low speeds getting killed...it's getting a little scary. It's a shame there are SOOOO many poor drivers out there that could care less about motorcycles and the safety of those riders.
I might need to wear a helmet at all times now.
