If you're old enough to remember, you remember. It was on sportscenter. When he left we were all shocked, but understood. When we found out he didn't spend time with family, he went to NASCAR, a lot of us were upset for not being honest. This is not opinion, but fact. All was forgiven when he came back, but you never know when he might do it again. So we need to enjoy his leadership while we have it.
Your comment of "does he owe us an explanation?" Of course not, but he offered one. He could have left for any reason in his own head, including burnt out or just don't have the spark anymore. No one would care. But don't tell us one thing and do another. However, he did cite health issues, and that was true...he should have left it at that.

Of course I was old enough to remember, we're both the same age. My physics teacher announced it in class that day. But, even you just now said that he cited health reasons in addition to his family. I do remember seeing the announcement of him retiring. I do remember that it was more than just his family that were reasons. It was his health and also being burned out. I really don't see where Gibbs lied to us and even if his reasons were not completely 100% authentic to the true reason for leaving, it isn't grounds for calling the man a liar.
But, like you said, we should be happy he is back now and trying to get this franchised turned around. Sure, we don't know when he might decide to leave. The guy does have diabetes and he is in his mid 60's. I believe if he decided to retire early, it would be because of his health and not because he can't get the job done.
