Here's how I understand it: John Riggins, who LOVED to party, goes to real LA TE DA party in DC soon after Sandra Day O'Connor takes the bench. Over the course of the evening, Riggo gets smashed. He literally passes out at his table. When he comes too, he looks over at Sandy, she of course has a look of disgust on her face and that's when he says:
Lighten Up Sandy Baby! The 2 of them became friends and she actually attended a play he starred in years later after football.
