Well, you can't put all those things (and other things) into one basket, but I do understand that is the easy thing to do. That's why it is done so much.
Certain guns and other weapons don't need to be owned or accessible by the general public. Certain drugs should be regulated or outright illegal. Abortion is only a need in some circumstances. Banning books is just stupid.
There will always be a "black market" for things that people want, but are not allowed to / or are too embarrassed/afraid to obtain in a legal manner.
Not everything should be made legal because people will just find a way. If someone wants to break into my house, no matter how much security I use to deter them, if they really want in - they will get in. Doesn't mean we should make breaking and entering legal. But once they get in, I will surely regulate them.
