Doing some quick and dirty math, the youngest fans who actually saw Sammy Baugh would be 76 years old. That's assuming a 7 years old saw him in this last year (1952). Not a big constituency, but I would take that name over Commanders any day. Impressed you know who he was.

Commanders is non-offensive. Nothing comes to mind when you think of commanders, except a generic image of a leader. That's why it's being considered probably.
That's where we're trending with sports team names nowadays. Kraken is the exception. Vegas Golden Knights, Cleveland Guardians, Oklahoma City Thunder - none of them are particularly intimidating.
It's hard to come up with a name that not only inspires confidence in a fanbase/strikes fear in an opponent while also being non-offensive to any singular group out there.
