Wolves are wildly popular as animals go. The gray wolf is the 9th most popular wild animal.
Wolves are symbols of ferocity, loyalty to the pack, and strength. Why would that be a bad symbol for a football team?
Wolves are natural adversaries of eagles, bears, even cowboys. And an image a Wolfpack taking down a giant would morph nicely into a defensive line sacking a qb.
As for red wolves at least they are a real creature that was indigenous here, and the tie to burgundy and gold is fairly obvious.
For me I have alot more trouble understanding the resistance to washington wolves (or redwolves)

While I prefer WFT or some form of that, I think Wolves is the best of all the other names out there.
