China had 80,880 cases, in a country far more densely populated then the US, and they currently have 9,848 active cases.
I think that actually bodes well for the US. The US population density is 33 people per sq. km vs China at 146. Likewise Italy is 200 people per.
No one, and definitely not me, knows what course this will run, but given the natural space the US has, and the response at all levels of government, I truly think that we will avoid the Italian or Chinese levels, even while we maintain our uniquely independent lives.
