Carlos Rogers

There was an 'overrated' thread a few weeks back, but he has made 3 great plays on some balls the past 2 weeks.. 2 picks and a near interception. He has also caused 3 fumbles this season in somewhat limited play. Looks like this kid may be the real deal.. I'd like to see him really step up in the next few weeks and make some impact plays.. Anyone else notice him?

He plays the run pretty well and he has done well in making up ground on plays that get behind him but I still don't like how easily at times he gets turned around by wrs and how far off he plays from the line of scrimmage. He's already been flagged a couple times for contact after 5 yards because of this and has probably gotten away with it a few times as well and I don't know if I'm alone on this but I'd prefer Willaims using him to jam wrs at the line instead of letting them run their routes free of contact until they catch it. he's already on par with smoot in my eyes thus far and I only see him geting better.

i think it's hard to call a rookie overrated, simply because he hasn't been playing for years. Cut him some slack, you can't expect him to come in and be the savior. I think Rogers has been playing above and beyond expectations. Yeah, i've seen him get burned, but that should be expected by rookie corners. Yeah, he gets tricked a bit on some fakes by wide receivers, but he'll learn to stay with them. He just needs experience. I think at this point he is at the point Sean Taylor was at last year by this time, except S.T. got put in the starting lineup much earlier.

I will admit it, i was getting fustrated with his 20 yard cushion.
He has played well the last two games and he is good at run support.

Re: Carlos Rogers

the 20 yard cushion was gregg williams call, as marshall went to get the WR, springs was doing it as well. rogers looks to be a very good prospect, he is already more solid than walt harris

Rogers and the rest of the defense plays better with the presence of Sean Taylor!

More than anything, Carlos apprears to be "around" the ball alot. He's making strides in that regard. I would like to see GW play him a little closer to the line, but I think he's wanting him to get more comfortable playing within the schemes, etc.

It's just a matter of time before we seeing him as man to man type corner.

Re: Carlos Rogers

CB is the hardest position to play on the field outside of QB. Besides a guy like Champ who simply had the immense talent to be successful straight form the word go most CBs take a little time to adjust to the pro game. I think we're seeing him advance a little faster than could be expected and that is very encouraging. Based on his level of advancement so far he could be playing at pro bowl type level come the end of next season. That is of course if he keeps imporving. I think he'll at least demonstrate that he a #1 type CB next season if not quite a pro-bowler.
Also, as has been mentioned he really seems to fit style-wise with this defense. Good pick for us.
I hope we can keep GW around a little longer because if we ever get a decent pass rusher it is going to be really fun to watch them play defense. They'll be scary.

I think you'll notice that our CBs in general play a decent cushion (this year at least). Aganist the more talented WRs they have run a modified bracket coverage with the CB playing back as a quasi-safety for that one WR with a LB flashing out to take away the quick hitters. I guess our lack of top-flight speed at CB has pushed us to more coverages like this. Plus our need to blitz safties means we can't play up on WRS as one step means a big play TD with no safety back. Carlos will move closer as they trust him more.

Rogers is progressing well, he seems to be a playmaker who's always around the ball.

I'm definitely excited to see how he'll look next year with a year under his belt.

I disagree with some of this post. First let me say its nice to see Rogers in the starting lineup, he has made some nice plays. But to say he has played "above and beyond expectations" I don't think that is accurate. Most of us thought when Rogers was drafted that he would be a starter opposite Springs by Week 3 or 4, and that Harris would be moved to the nickle. Rogers is taking longer to develop than most expected. He is looking better and he defintitely is a better tackler than Harris.

Re: Carlos Rogers

Do the "anti-Rogers" people realize he was injured earlier in the year and that played a factor in him developing slower than expected?

paulskinsfan 12-05-2005 11:24 AM

Re: Carlos Rogers

Matt, I am not, nor have I ever been an "anti-Rogers" person. The subject of whether or not he was overrated after not cracking into the starting lineup by week 12 when Walt Harris was being burned on a weekly basis was a legitimate topic of conversation and debate. You don't draft a guy that high and Not expect him to be in the starting lineup by week 12 when others are playing that poorly. He has now been given an opportunity, and he does pretty well but still gives up a big play or two.
