Dline Roster mistakes?

Ok, now that the glorious honeymoon period is over (most are still on high proof kool aid, including me)
I'd like to discuss what I think may have been a mistake that cost us a SuperBowl.

No one mid year last year expected us to contend this year, so ownership basically gutted our defensive line, arguably the strength of our team.

Why did we not get to the superbowl? Defense, particularly the inability to stop the run. And what are we doing now? We are now considering trading future draft picks and tremendous cap space to replace what was once our strength. What if we had kept our 4 #1 draft pick line alone? Would we have been more likely to beat Philly in the NFC championship and moving forward?

I also wonder if we would have used last years draft to draft another needed talent like cb or wr or OT vs Newton. These roles were filled instead by trading away draft picks for older expensive banged up vets (cb/wr).

I mean I am not opposed to older vets, but trading away draft picks when you dont have to is risky. There are a lot if cb and wr available now without giving up picks.

I do think it is kinda funny that our greatest strength , DLine, is now such an urgent need. It didnt have to be that way. The argument was to stockpile draft picks, but now we are trading them all away instead of using them to draft wisely.

Jayden greatly accelerated the timeline, we went from recalibration mode to a legit Super Bowl window.

It’s time to be aggressive.

Not sure what you are referring to here.

Young and Sweat were traded before he got here, the other 2 guys he kept and added to with Newton.

You are right, I am a dumbass!
This is more if an inconsistency of new owner pre and post Peters.

If we kept Sweat possible chance we don't have Sainristil - when we traded with Philly the pick we used on Sainristil was part of that package. I like Sweat too but his prime years were wasted along with Jon Allen and Payne.

I also feel like you're overrating the "success" of our defensive line. They were putting up mediocre results with a lot of big names.

Let's correct the original post; imagine RR and co. hadn't f'd up the picks they had and AP had come in here with a better roster already in place. No, we've done that one to death.

I think the thing is, had Ron had any brains we'd likely already have a QB i.e. Tua or Herbert, a CB like Gonzalez and possibly Sweat still here. AP could then have addressed OL a bit better/sooner. But we'd still have an aging Allen and Sweat, Payne not far behind and probably still need 1 or 2 edge rushers and more beef in the middle. AP has done well so far, and if Lattimore works out, he'll have done even better. Lets see what this draft delivers, but I'd be surprised if he wouldn't readily admit the DL is one of his top priorities.
