Ouch! He's a promising back but this seems awfully high: Already basking in the glow of their trade for Randy Moss, the Oakland Raiders later on Wednesday delivered on their promise to bolster their backfield. LaMont Jordan, the top free-agent available at running back, agreed in principle Wednesday in a five-year deal worth $27.5 million. Contract terms will be finalized Thursday. "We have a deal in principle that he should sign tomorrow morning -- 99.9 percent sure he will be a Raider," Jordan's agent, Alvin Keels, told The Associated Press in an e-mail Wednesday night. The deal is considered a blockbuster. Jordan will receive about $15.7 million in guarantees over the first three years of the contract, including a $7 million signing bonus. He had an offer of more than $3 million a year to stay with the Jets. Jordan, 24, backed up Curtis Martin for four seasons in New York but has yearned to be a full-time player. Jordan rushed for 479 yards on 93 carries last season and owns a career average of 4.9 yards per carry. At 5-foot-10 and 230 pounds, he is the big, physical back the Raiders had sought. The addition of Jordan coincided with the Raiders' release of veteran running back Tyrone Wheatley. Defensive tackle John Parrella also was released. How did the Raiders work out these cap problems they supposedly had?

Weren't they in a huge hole just last week? I know they cut some guys but c'mon

Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
I know Charels Woodson signed his franchise tag tender sheet for like 10 million, and that really put them in trouble. I never really heard what happend with that, but they resigned Jerry Porter (who counted nothing against the cap before, since he was a FA), traded for Moss and made this signing...... thats a pretty good cap genius they have over there.

Wow, I didn't even know Jordan was that good. And he is the top FA RB? Wow!
|
Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
yeah, arent you glad we got portis last year... the rest are just going to draft i assume, since there are 3-4 solid RB picks...

Jordan is a promising back. Too much money. Oakland taking our place this year!

Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
I dk he is a solid back a little to much loot, but oh well. Oakland's starting offense is preety nasty. Collins-QB, Jordan-Rb, Crockett-FB, Moss and Porter starting WR, and Doug Jolley Te. Thats pretty explosive.

Gallery is also going to be one helluva tackle... but it's their D that's still horrendous! well, i guess they wanna give their fans an offensive show since their defense is still going to look like the red sea...

Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
Did we try to shop Ladell Betts? He seems ready to be the number one guy. The draft seems pretty deep this year for RBs and the Raiders second rounder for Betts would be good enough to draft a solid backup for Portis or give us more options in the draft to draft the better WR and/or DE. :oink:

Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
Their defense is going to be awful...............Norv is concentrating on offense and Al Davis is buying into his plan..............and we all know how successful Turner was as Redskin coach

Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
Jordan showed to be an outstanding #2 running back over the past couple of years. Granted, he was behind Curtis Martin and that is why he did not get to play more, but he has been a #2 all the time. Now he is getting #1 money and he better be ready to do #1 kind of work and deliver #1 kind of productivity.
Look to take the OVER in lots of Raiders games next year. They are going to score; that's for sure. But I don't think they are going to stop many folks with their defense either... |
Re: wow, Raiders to give Lamont Jordan 5 yrs 27.5M!
Jordan definitely deserves the opportunity to be a starter, just seems like a ton of cash to throw at a relatively unproven guy. I think he'll work out for them though, he's a tough runner with enough speed to get outside.
Now they just need some help on D. |
