The Legitimacy of Super Bowls 17 & 22
Being from Washington D.C. and living in NYC, a lot of NY Giants fans like to claim that the Redskins victories over the Miami Dolphins and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowls 17 and 22 are not legit simply because they happened only because NFL players strikes shortened those seasons. What they don't realize is that that 1982 team was good enough to not only amass the most points in a season in NFL history the next season and return to the Super Bowl, had it won it would have been considered the greatest team off all time.
As far as the 1987 team, they had made it to the NFC championship game and lost against the NYG the previous year. To be good enough to go that far and then go back the next season not only reveals how good a team the 1987 team was, but like the 1982 team, proves it's legitimacy. The Giants fans are drunk with their chest poked out only because they've won 2 Super Bowls in the past 5 years. Their arrogance blinds them to reality, I often tell them. But their day is coming when under Coach Coughlin they will endure a miserable losing season. I seek the true insight of Redskins Nation on this topic. Thoughts? |

Me and Alvin Walton agree on this subject. |
Re: The Legitimacy of Super Bowls 17 & 22
The fact that the Redskins won those Super Bowls and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle presented Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke with those Super Bowl trophies in 1982 and in 1987, proves that those wins were in fact legitimate.

Lmao ok who cares? So last year don't count the giants sb

Giants fans like to talk a lot of trash. If you tell them that Eli Manning is not an elite NFL QB, then they get angry about it. |

Him and Roethlisbeger to me are in the same category...great QB surround by good talent who are clutch. They get the job done period. Cant ask for much more. |

Eli Manning has a lowly 82.6 career QB rating. He has won 2 Super Bowls, but his statistics are not on par with the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Ben Roethlisberger has a 92.7 career QB rating and has also won 2 Super Bowls. Phillip Rivers, who also was drafted in the same draft and the same round as the two mentioned QBs, has a 95.0 career QB rating. Eli Manning is very good. I won't say that he isn't. But he isn't elite or great. But I don't consider elite or great as going up against a 32nd ranked defense in the Super Bowl and coming from behind to win it. |
If it was so easy to win those years why didn't any one else win it? Plus didn't the Giants win one in a strike year?

I don't recall any strike years before 1982 or after 1987. The Giants won it all in 1986 and in 1990. If Norwood makes that FG in Super Bowl 25 then the Giants have 3 SB trophies instead of 4. As far as winning Super Bowls in the strike years are concerned, there were 28 teams in the NFL during that era. Every team is a potential candidate to win the Super Bowl until they are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention whether that elimination takes place in the regular season or the post season. It just so happened that the Redskins were the last team standing after those seasons were over. That has nothing to do with the amount of games played. It has more to do with qualification. And the Redskins were qualified to win those Super Bowls those seasons. |
Re: The Legitimacy of Super Bowls 17 & 22
Super bowl 17 playoff structure was a 16 team tournament NO BYES.

Re: The Legitimacy of Super Bowls 17 & 22
SB 17 & 22 are MORE legitimate because of the strikes. It is a testament to great coaching and a great organization to win with the level playing field of replacement players....and the Skins never had a player cross the picket line. In 1987 they were the ONLY team with no players to cross. So NYG had some regular players, while the Skins were all replacements, and the Skins still prevailed.
BS argument by NYG fans who aren't the brightest anyway. |
Re: The Legitimacy of Super Bowls 17 & 22
Skins won games with scabs and regular players, even upsetting the Dallas Cowboys fielding 7 of their best players vs none for Washington. Joe Gibbs greatness and coaching, Bobby Beathard providing the talent, was what won those SB's, strike or no strike.
