What about replacing Patrick Johnson

Didn't see this posted anywhere else so...

I suppose we are going to look at replacing Patrick with a FA WR, but anyone think it would be worth using our 5th rounder on a WR?

dieselhog 03-22-2004 06:50 AM

I don't think he needs replacing. I think there are enough receivers on the roster - aside from Laveraneous and Gardner - there are McCants - at least for now- Russell, Jacobs, Cloman....

Maybe try out some rookie FAs. I don't think we need to go shopping for a receiver.

Daseal 03-22-2004 07:35 AM

Yeah I'd like to see more of Jacobs, Cloman, Russell and Richmond (In that order.) Let him go! I definitly hope we keep McCants around.

AnonEmouse 03-22-2004 07:43 AM

Kind of what I thought. I hope Jacobs and Russell start doing something this year. IF McCants goes too, then it's going to be important for them to step up.

I agree... we have bodies as WR but need them in other places.

I also agree. We still haven't had a chance to get a good look at Russell, Jacobs, or Cloman. If you really think about it, our WR's are all still very young, so we should be alright in that position. I heard Russell has a lot potential and Cloman showed that he can play last season during the preseason. I think we should worry about our D-line that still needs maybe 1 more pass rusher and a run stopping d-tackle. We have good linebackers, decent corners, and if we draft S.Taylor our secondary will be among the top 10 in the NFC.

I've quickly replaced Johnson with Cloman on my Madden roster. I had to create Cloman, as he didn't exist in Madden. I realize Russell is still around, but frankly, from what little I've seen of both receivers (mostly during training camp and preseason games), Cloman seems like a far better all-around player, and would seem to have a better shot at making the roster. Whoever winds up as that 4th/5th receiver is going to have to play a lot of special teams, and Cloman has shown he can do that. Plus, the guy made some amazing catches in training camp and the preseason, and I love his attitude. I'll be interested to see how he does in NFL Europe this year.

skinsfanthru&thru 03-22-2004 04:58 PM

I agree joecrisp and I think the only reason he wasn't on the roster instead of Russel was because spurrier had used a 3rd rounder i beleive to draft russel and wanted to see if he could produce now that he was healthy and from what he showed, Russel has speed but hands like bricks. I don't know if anyone here has seen the movie Unneccesary Roughness or not but Russel reminds me kinda of the receiver in that movie.

He could be replaced with a statue as far as Im concerned.

Daseal 03-22-2004 08:07 PM

A sprinting statue? He was a quick receiver, I think he'll do ok in Tampa. Brad Johnson throws tiny passes and will allow him to use his feet to make yards.

Didn't he sign with the Bengals, not the Bucs?

AnonEmouse 03-23-2004 10:22 AM

Correct. It will be interesting if he helps or hinders Palmer.

Gmanc711 03-23-2004 10:26 AM

He will be the #3 at best their right? Behind Johnson and Warrick. I dont think he wil really make an impact thier, just be a solid ST guy.

sportscurmudgeon 03-23-2004 01:13 PM

Patrick Johnson is not a bad football player nor is he an overpaid fraud. But he is also not a guy who is critical to a team - either by his presence or his absence.

If "finding a replacement for Patrick Johnson" is the single biggest challenge and obstacle faced by the coaching staff and the team this year, they will be a cinch to:

1. Go 16-0 in the regular season,

2. Win the Super Bowl and

3. Cover the spread every weekend.

Curmudgeon, how was Vegas?
