Re: Roman gladiator cemetery found in England
I read that this am too, pretty awesome. When we covered this stuff in high school history I always perked up.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the north, general of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. |

awesome! the line, "It would seem highly unlikely that this individual was attacked by a tiger as he was walking home from the pub in York 2,000 years ago" made me laugh.

Re: Roman gladiator cemetery found in England
Did the guys uncovered in the burial sight fight in Rome or did they fight in arenas local to England under Roman rule? I can't imagine the stench of having to transport a body from Rome to England.

According to the Spartacus series on Starz, it seems that there were areans in cities throughout the Roman Empire. So I would believe that they were gladiators that fought in England as entertainment also... |

Yeah, and each arena had it's own level of competition. Kind of like A, AA, AAA, or the majors. When you got to Rome, as a gladiator you had made the big show. You had to win your way through some lower levels before they'd let you compete before the emperor. |

I hate to be a Debbie Downer but most of these guys were slaves forced into combat so the Mob could be preoccupied with savage entertainment. Tragic.

You mean not everyone wanted to fight lions and tigers and bears? Oh my! Many were and many were the children of gladiators. There was a lot of pride associated with what they did, at least those higher up. |
