Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
Strangely enough, I was wondering about what was going on with our punter situation yesterday. I knew that Hunter Smith was unlikely to return, but I didn't really expect Bidwell to be the guy.
Guess it makes sense with the Tampa-Allen connection |
Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
True, but I don't see why Hunter wouldn't be back. He did a great job.

Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
sadly hunter smith was one of the few bright spots from last year. SS are you surprised cause this guy sucks or surprised becasue he is good?

yeah why would you think hunter wouldn't be back? he was our season mvp |
Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
I'm surprised because the rumor was that the Redskins were in no rush to bring back Hunter Smith because of his age and they thought he was decent enough last year but probably wasn't going to get all that much better. And they wondered if playing in the NFC East would really be beneficial to an older punter who's been playing most of his career in a dome in Indy...and then they sign an older guy who's spent most of his career punting in Tampa?

Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
Last year he had the second highest average yard per punt of his career @ 44.5 yards and 35% of his kicks resulted in the opposing team starting in their own redzone. (correction: just noticed his last stats were 2008)

Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
And I don't think Bidwell even played last year
|
Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
i get that hunter was old but it's not like he is a back up db, he is a kicker when you find a good one you usually stick with em
|
Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
I would have stuck with him. Sometimes though, new regimes just want their own guys. Which seems to be the case here I think. Because I don't think Smith was against returning and it's not like his services are being heavily sought after

Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
If you look at Hunter's stats last year, he was in the bottom half in avg and net. Couple that with the injury issues, I guess they just figured it was worth it to move on.

Re: Redskins Sign P Josh Bidwell
Is he as big an offensive weapon as Hunter Smith? :)

I guess if there is any reason to replace him, it would be his durability, but he was great when in the game. I doubt we'll be playing so desperately from behind that we'll need some Zorny plays involving punters scoring TDs...so his gadget-play factor is no reason to hold onto him. Shame, I liked Hunter the Punter a lot, but at least we're getting a quality punter I've heard of in Bidwell. He's a former Pro Bowler. |

Rumor is that Bidwell is the MASTER of the swinging gate play! |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers punter Josh Bidwell lost for year with hip injury - St. Petersburg Times looks like a hip injury just got worse and worse until he needed surgery, the article says there shouldn't be any long term effects but we will find that out in the next few months. hopefully he works out and goes back to pro bowl caliber. having good defensive field position last year kept us in alot of games |
