How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Could Rogers be a good free safety for us?
A move to FS would allow Landry to move back to SS, we keep Hall on a corner, and we fill the other CB position in free agency. Rogers is a pretty good tackler but has stone hands when he has to adjust quickly to the ball. The FS position would allow him to keep the ball in front of him (which might help). I don't see him moving into the elite category of CB's in this league, but I could see him as being so versatile from the FS position that he could be matched up against anyone creating confusion for opposing offenses. If he would go for it, does anyone else think this would work? |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
He'd need to add some bulk. He'd probably bitch about it though. Since that is what he does.

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
I think that he's a bit more of a man CB than a roamer or someone who picks up the route or the last line of defense, he's not the best tackler.

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Hopefully, our defense will play bump and run, he excells at that. This year we played ten yards off the ball and gaveup too many short passes. It is easier to find a safety than a cornerback.

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
I think I mentioned this back in December, but Tripp arguably had a better idea in moving Hall to FS where he can be the ballhawk that he is.
Still, don't think either has the ability that say Shawn Springs had in moving easily between CB and FS...can we bring Springs back for a year? |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
I think Rogers is a pure CB & doesn't seem to adjust to changes or instructions very well, so I doubt he would be a good FS, at least for a while.
Something that I've been wanting to start a thread on - Kareem Moore as starting FS? I like this guy & he's played pretty well when given the chance. He doesn't have LL's blazing speed, but speed becomes irrelevant when you go the opposite direction of the recievers! I think Moore will push for at least more pt if not a starting job. |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Instead of fitting square pegs into round holes, let's just sign a decent free safety. If New Orleans lets Darren Sharper get away (doubtful), that's the kind of guy you want.
Converting a CB just doesn't sound like a championship strategy. |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Who do you put in at starting CB with Hall if you move Rogers?? For the record I'm not a fan of such a move at all.

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Worst idea ever!

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
Rogers at FS would certainly be a last resort type of option. Assuming he returns, he does have more value as a shutdown corner with hands of stone.
I think for me the bigger questions at safety are a) can Kareem Moore finally be a starting FS allowing LL to play at SS and b) what about Chris Horton? |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
I am not a fan of moving any corners. As argued above, we should just get a real safety. But, if someone MUST move, I agree with Tripp that D.Hall is a better choice than 'Los.

Because guys like Woodson, Springs, and Rolle have all done it |
Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
This is the same type of Madden thinking that gets people in trouble.

Re: How about moving Rogers to free safety?
If the decision is made to keep him here I look for the new coaching staff to maximize his ability as a CB. I've never felt the way he was being used best suited his talent level. The knock on him has always been his inability to catch the ball, much of that had to do with his not being able to locate the ball in flight.
Playing the safety position would afford him the opportunity to see more plays developing in front of him, but his natural position is more of a CB than S. |
