ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Charles Woodson wants to be known as more than a football player.

Donating $2 million to the new University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital gives him a chance to do that.
The school announced Woodson's gift on Thanksgiving before he played for the Green Bay Packers against the Detroit Lions.

Then, he intercepted two passes — returning one for a score — forced a fumble, recovered it and had a sack.



"It was a good day," Woodson said after Green Bay's 34-12 win in Detroit.

His donation will support pediatric research by The Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund in the $754-million, 1.1-million square foot hospital scheduled to open in 2012.

It's a shame we only seem to hear about the negative stuff, but that's what the media feeds off of.

That's pretty awesome. $2M isn't chump change, even to NFL players. Good for him.

I know Warrick Dunn is another example of a guy who gives very generously. He buys houses and fills them with furniture and food for poor families pretty regularly.

Some guys also do these types of things and wish to remain anonymous, or at least not be a news story.

True, but I'm guessing the guys that get busted for DWI or letting it rain in a strip club wished they could have been anonymous too. LOL

Agreed. Not being anonymous doesn't diminish the gesture IMO. Especially when it's $2M to a Children's Hospital.

Yeah there are a lot of athletes who do anonymous charity work, but there are also several athletes whose trangressions the public doesn't find out about (usually becomes team management keeps it under wraps)

But you know who does a lot, I mean a lot, of charity work and no one ever hears anything about it....Terrell Owens

I feel like there are lots of stories like this out here, but they dont get the attention from media/fans that negative press typically does. Most of the guys in the NFL are great guys that give back a lot, too bad their names are typically ruined by the few knuckleheads out there.

That's a great point. Drama and craziness sells. A headline story about Woodson giving money to a hospital isn't going to garner the attention that something controversial will. The media sensationalizes the stories that will result in the most "hits" if you will.

Great point , an athlete gives to charity and gets no attention from the press , yet if he goes to dinner , has a drink or to = he's an alcoholic . Too many drama queens in the media/press , too lazy to find a great news story .

In 2005 the PGA hit the 1 billion donation mark which all got started in 1938. This does not even count what all the tour players do on their own.
