Who knows about the mysterious 1982 LOGO

Why did we use this logo for only one year? Why did we change this logo after winning the SUPER BOWL? Whats your favorite logo and uniform combo? I was just reading up on some history of the Redskins and I came across this pic and now Im really intrested in the story behind it. I looked a few places for an answer but I found nothing. Maybe someone here can help me out. Thanks |

Found at
Letters at the end of the answer to the first question. "In 1982 there was a one season change that had the Indian feathers curve around the ring of the Indian head rather than hang vertically. This change was made to make the decal easier to apply to the helmet without creasing. When a more flexible vinyl was introduced the next season the team returned to the vertically positioned feather design." |
Re: Who knows about the mysterious 1982 LOGO
I remember that year some players (well, Joe Washington at least) stayed with the straight feathers logo

Re: Who knows about the mysterious 1982 LOGO
Correct, not all players wore the helmet logo with tucked feather in '82. I had heard that it was not the team, but the manufacturer of the decals that made the decision to tuck the feathers. I'm not sure it could be a mistake since it obviously required some editing of the logo, but it was not the team's decision from what I know.

Yeah it was a the fault of the decal manufacturer.

Re: Who knows about the mysterious 1982 LOGO
Thanks for the answers. I like the 59 helmet never really seen that one. I have an 70's Indian head helmet that was given to my mom in the late 80's buy a former player but I dont know who it was, and she doesnt remember. He wasn't a starter but who cares.
I was thinking there was going to be some type story behind the logo but the manufactor did to make easier to apply, ok. I wonder why they decided to do that after a decade of straight feathers? |

Re: Who knows about the mysterious 1982 LOGO
I really like that. It's more like a good luck feeling on the feather. I don't know why it shows respect. We gotta give that a try on our helmets again later.
