Chris Cooley Reception Streak Broken

Not that individual efforts should matter that much in a team game like football. Chris Cooley just snapped his 81 game reception streak today against the panthers dating back to September 12, 2004.

Out of all of our players I don't think there is any reason we shouldn't be finding Cooley on a regular basis...not for this streak but because he is a vital possesion receiver. Just on a strategic basis we should be feeding him every game.

There was a pretty good reason: Carolina wasn't letting him off the line with about two or three guys hitting him.

It's probably the best defensive gameplan against us in the last two years, and frankly, we weren't able to rely on anyone else.

If they were doing that every play how does that not open up other weaknesses in the defense?

Why couldn't we take advantage of those weaknesses considering they had the worst ranked run defense in the league after Week 4?

It's almost maddening to see that people can say that teams have Moss double covered, Cooley held up at the line and 8 men in the box to stop Portis. When will we be able to have a coach who can take advantage of what the defense is giving us...or at least make adjustments?

Bottom line, you have to get to your #1 play maker. I could care less about personal goals, but COOLEY HAS to be involved. And not in a blocking/Chipping role, he CAN'T BLOCK!

Batiste had something to do with that. Not on every play, but certainly plenty of them.

You have the responsibility falling to a bunch of players who are just failing to step up. It's a common link to all bad football teams.

He didn't have the opportunity to release into many patterns today. Spent most of the afternoon trying to block.

Interesting that if Cooley catches 10 passes or no passes, the result is basically the same.

It's not about the stats.. it's about how can you go a game without even targeting the guy?

I think he was in the gameplan but Samuels injury changed that we already had a problem with Heyer on the right and losing our best OL member was critical. You can't do anything when defenders our in the backfield attacking your QB & RB every play you need some help and Cooley was the "HELP".

So it's come down to our O-Line depth and we're only in Week 5 of the season...

I seem to remember us suffering the same problem last year at the end of the season. We go into this offseason just maintaining our depth (Dockery for Kendall) and make no other additions. We take the luxury of signing one $40M player but don't address our depth needs on the O-Line.

No matter the reason Cooley didn't get a catch today it all comes down to the lack of foresight by our front office to get people in a position for success.

I totally agree
