Another Moral Question
The other night I was talking with some of my buddies and one of them quoted Shakespeare. He said, "The more laws a country has the more corrupt it is." Now that's not a direct quote but you get the picture.
I was thinking about this when I read over the speeding thread. There sure are a lot of cameras up these days. The last time I was in London they had cameras everywhere. I said to myself, "I'm sure glad we don't have those in my country." Now they're everywhere. This is a big brush thread, it isn't just about cameras. I just used them as an example. I can't stand them. They make me feel like I'm living in a police state. What sayeth the Mob? |
Re: Another Moral Question
What is the moral issue exactly?
|
Re: Another Moral Question
I think it's "should we have less laws or laws at all" but I am not sure.

Re: Another Moral Question
I didnt do it this time! lol
No, really though, I get what you are saying. Maybe the moral issue is that by keeping us safe by placing cameras and the like everywhere, they are also invading our personal space. Or maybe not.... |

I don't know really. I was thinking that someone would run with it. The street camera thing gets me. You could use the recent cigarette tax. Smokers were already getting their butts off the blackmarket but now it's even worst. Say for instance I went to N.C. and bought a crate of smokes. I could then go up to NY and sell those smokes at a huge profit. That's tax evasion. Since that transaction goes over State lines it becomes a Federal offense. The act in itself wasn't morally wrong from a purely capitalist standpoint. So how it's worthy of prison time for selling a product that's legal? Here's another one. Say for instance I wanted to sell crack. If I got busted with an ounce of crack I'd be sentenced under Federal guidelines. Yet if I was a banker and got caught washing money for the Mexican sindicates I'd serve less time. Either that or I'd get whacked before I could testify. Who's doing more to damage society, the banker or the dealer? Now I know there is a HUGE difference between what is legal and what is moral. My thinking is inclined to believe that a more moral society wouldn't need as many laws because, that said society would be less inclined to engage in criminal behaviour. |
