Running in yesterdays game

I went to the game with two Giants fans yesterday, and both of them couldnt stop complaining about how boring the game was and were begging gibbs to call a pass play to keep it interesting.

What do you guys think about the fact that we ran soooooo much yesterday? Is this Gibbs attempt to not show to many plays? did he want to get the running game going since it hasnt been?

We had the ball for 42 minutes in the game, 42 MINUTES!!

If Portis was in we would have been crushing them even more. Ramsey didnt even get a shot in the second half, all he did was hand it off.

I'd really like to see some passing next game. I'm not worried about the running game, but I think they did it to evaluate talent and I truly believe the last two games will be very pass happy.

I don't mind them winning ugly ... let's win first and worry about style later. Gibbs is going to call plenty of long bombs this year. Yesterday he was trying to set a tone fot his team ... he wants them to be tougher.

a wins a win, i couldnt care less how we get it

A win is a win - in the regular season. We need our QBs and WRs to be on the same page!

I think that running was a big part of the game plan because up to this point we hadn't run very well at all. I was pleased to see us running the football and actually running it rather well. I liked what I saw last night, however I do agree that they should have been throwing with at least a little with Ramsey in the game. No matter what the case, they still have 2 more games to get the passing game going.

Gibbs probably has a few reasons for calling the game so conservatively. One, he wants to get the o-line cracking and confident. Steamrolling a dazed Miami defense shpuld help with that. Two, as was mentioned above, he wants to set a tone for the team on O. When we want to, we can take over the game at the line of scrimmage and just run it down your throats. Three, it was time to get Portis rolling.

But I think the most important is four, keeping it close to the vest and setting up some awesome play-action stuff in the regular season. Teams, at least early on, will scheme for the run and find themselves looking at the back of our WRs on the way to the endzone. We should see more passing against the Rams, but I wouldn't expect much more. Wait until Tampa. As for getting the WRs and QBs in synch, I have confidence in the coaching staff to fully prepare the team.

All good points JW. Let's also remember that it's not like these guys are just sitting on their ass all week then they just step on to the football field come game time. I have no idea what's going on in practice, but I'm sure that the QBs and WRs are practicing a lot together

SkinsRock 08-22-2004 05:57 PM

They wanted to get the running game going, since it has been lacking. Plus, running the ball gives the O-line more confidence, so when they do pass more, they are more motivated to play well.

BossHog 08-22-2004 06:44 PM

Maybe they were bored because they weren't watching their team play?!

aehs77 08-22-2004 08:04 PM

my highschool coach use to have this philosophy of run it till they stop it then try something diffrent. miami never stopped it so why fix something that s not broken.

oldswill 08-22-2004 08:13 PM

i like to see the team iron out at least one area of the offense in the preseason.
think back to regular season last year and carolina, they started out pounding the ball while the passing game took its time to find its footing. if gibbs feels he needs to get comfortable with the running game than thats what we need to work on.

illdefined 08-22-2004 09:45 PM

winning a game by running the whole game is far from ugly

exit0 08-22-2004 10:45 PM

Anybody who watched the Gibbs 1 era with the Skins know that he doesn't call an extensive game plan during preseason games. He's trying to get the guys working together as a unit and getting them in sync first by running basic vanilla plays. He is going to get the running game established first and get the OL to be a unit working together. You can already see a huge difference in the minimum of dumb plays and dumb penalties in comparison to the past couple of years.

I wouldnt complain about running the ball too much for the simple reason that if we are running alot that means we are protecting a lead.also o-lineman love to run the ball, it gives them confidence and sets up play action passes down the field.
