Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
I'm sorry for yet another coaching thread, but does Snyder risk losing the faith and confidence of the team, fans and future free agents if he ignores the players almost unanimous support of Grilliams?
Not only would a new coach have to learn a new franchise, new players, new front office style but may also have to overcome a bitter locker room. As much as we say these guys are professionals and need to just play for whomever is the coach we all saw the near mutiny with Marty, how Coughlin struggled in NY to gain respect among the players, etc. It can be done successfully (Tomlin in Pittsburgh when all the players expected/wanted Wisenhunt or Grimm) but with our recent history of instability would this be a 'final straw' type of move for a lot of people? |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
He would probably have to do something to appease the fans, i.e. hire a new guy but bring in a GM as well.
Thought it's important to remember that if Williams comes aboard as head coach and decides to get rid of the entire offensive staff (for example), is that more stability than if say Russ Grimm became head coach, promoted Greg Blache to Assistant Head Coach, and kept everything else intact? |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
i can't see the skins doing anything significant next year unless williams is the coach.
i have'nt heard a thing about joe bugel or torgenson retiring with gibbs either! |

Absolutely. In my opinion(which doesn't mean squat in the grand scheme of things) would cause a major meltdown.Organization, fans, and especially the players. I really hope that DS did learn something from Gibbs. I'm also a bit concerned that maybe Gibbs isn't a GW supporter. If Gibbs still has an impact on this team as an advisor then what the hell is the hold up? And I'm pretty tired of hearing about that Rooney rule. It didn't take the fins with Parcells in charge this damn long. |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
I think Williams gives the team continuity....at least on defense. I'm concerned about the continuity on offense, but I hope Campbell has matured enough to be able to adapt to a new offensive scheme. I really doubt Al Saunders will stick around if Williams becomes the head coach.

I would say that the answer is yes. The players know GW's leadership style, even those on offense, so having him at the top would allow for a smoother transition than if a newcomer were brought in, even if he replaced some key staff. |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
Rock and other offensive players are publicly supporting GW. I think he has to be the choice. If not,I expect an overhaul of the team.

Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
Unless there is some reason that is being WELL hidden by the team not to hire GW, it is done. It has been done for some time and this is just window dressing. I would be stunned beyond reasonable thought if he is not awarded the job............................please, please, please

Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
all i,m going to say is i hope the skins and dan synder does the right thing for this organization for the long haul..
i,m not getting hell bent over this really i,m just going with the flow like they are at the moment. |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
Ok, I keep hearing about all the players that support him but besides Rock (who is a free agent and could be gone) who else has stepped infront of a mike and said they want GW?

He's the majority owner of the team and he can do what ever the hell he wants. If the players don't like it then so be it. Coaching changes happen all the time. O/C's and D/C's are hired and fired all the time. Look at Jacksonville? They've had 3 different offensive coordinator's in 4 or 5 years? Dallas didn't seem to have a problem adjust ing to Wade Phillips did they? I know they lost last week but they still went 13-3 w/ a new head coach and two new coordinators. Why? Because they had the best players. All the owners are sniffing Jason Garrett's jock. Like he has something special in his playbook or something. He's got TO, Whitten,Barber and Romo who are all damn good players. All of this coaching stuff is sooooooooooo over rated. Again, it comes down to players. Al Saunders playbook doesn't look so good w/out the best O-line in the NFL, Priest Holmes, Trent Green in his prime and Tony G. does it? Honestly I'm tired of all the coaching crap. Name a damn HC and let's move on to the draft and free agency! |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
Any faith that is lost if GW isn't the guy would be quickly regained with a winning season.
Change is part of the game in the NFL. Coaches come and go and so do players. Would some players be disappointed initially if GW wasn't the guy? Sure. But I'm sure as professionals they would eventually get over it and get back to work for whoever the new coach is. |

I thought it looked pretty good with a journeyman QB and a banged-up O-line. Moreover, even if he had a great RB, O-line and QB, the simple fact is his offense was absolutely dominant. |

There have also been a bunch of guys on the Redskins Insider who have backed Williams, but I can't think of names off the top of my head and I'm much too lazy to go looking for them now. |
Re: Can Snyder go with anyone but GW?
What scares me most is that Dan Snyder is left to chose yet another coach. To me, it's not a situation he's best suited for. I WISH he would somehow learn to adopt the wisdom of his predesessor, a man scilled in knowledge of the sports world, and have someone in place with knowledge about how to get where he's trying to go.
