What's that supposed to mean? Let's not forget some other Heismann Trophy winners: Eric Crouch, Andre Ware, Gino Torretta, Rashan Salaam and of course Danny Wuerffel (I don't like to knock Danny though, he's a great guy)

Spurrier isn't coming back to the NFL. He's not dumb.

Ok, I've got a serious question for you Daseal. And maybe others have wondered this as well.

You're pretty young so you might not remember much from the first Gibbs era. I mean statisically you can read stuff but to actually feel the energy and respect associated with this team is a different matter.

So here's my question: Were you more excited when Steve Spurrier was named coach of the Redskins or when Joe Gibbs announced he was coming back?

were you actually sad when Spurrier retired? He did nothing right as a coach in my opinion. Even the stuff off teh field. I dont think he woudl practice if he didnt have to. The amount of times I heard that man say that we're all professoinals so they know what they did wrong and should correct it on their own because its their job. Imagine how bad the Skins would have been his first year as a coach if he didnt have Lewis. Im glad we have Gibbs now, it all worked out. But I would have loved to have had Marvin Lewis be our headcoach instead of Spurrier, we should have signed him from the get go. Im sure all of us would be happy with that right now to, because we would have never thought Gibbs would come back.

OK, I don't remember a lot from the first Gibbs era, you are correct. I remember watching a few super bowls and seeing that, but I was quite young. I was easily more excited to hear Steve Spurrier was the head coach of the Redskins. I've always been a big Florida fan since that's where my Dad went to college and I grew up watching the Gators. It's not as if I don't like Joe Gibbs, but Spurrier is the man.

SkinsNCanes, how many times did Mr. Edwards let us down when we had a lead? Quite a few. Our defense simply couldn't hold on long enough at the end of the game. Spurriers offense showed flashes of brilliance and it's complex. I still don't think the system was fully in place yet, and I think that his work ethic did hurt.

I don't think Spurrier could realisticly come back to Washington with any respect, HOWEVER I do believe that if he goes to another place (say Miami once Wandstat gets canned) and surrounds him with experienced NFL coaching staff, he'll do just fine. I don't feel that the skins had the right guys for Oline coach, D coordinator, and a variety of positions. And I hate to say it, but Ramsey is completely wrong for his offense. Steve Spurrier will be fine if he goes to a rebuilding team which will give him some room to work. Remember, he had a better first two years than Bellicheck and Jimmy Johnson. Not bad.

How would you explain Spurrier's system and it's fundamental flaws, mainly being the total disregard for protecting the QB?

Spurrier is a great coach at the college level, but he was completely overwhelmed in the pros. His system stunk, his work ethic stunk, and he's just yet another college great who couldn't hack it in the NFL.

Spurrier was a great college coach, true. But then he came into the NFL and acted like with one snap of the finger it would all just magically happen in the pros as well. Look at Gibbs, already has three Super Bowl rings and he works as hard, if not harder than, as any other coach in the NFL. It's that dedication that we never saw from Spurrier.

But let's not worry about that now. The Man is Back!!!! Less than 24 hours to go!

Despite the fact that I dont agree with Daseal's entire opinion, I will concede that he has a point about Edwards. The defense really let the team down, especially in the first half of the season. I doubt there was much dissent when we were 3-1.

The big problem with Spurrier was that he was unwilling to adapt. He wanted to win his way, with his offense pretty much the way it was.
On the other hand, the ability to adapt to his players strengths and adjust to what an opponent is doing are Gibbs biggest strengths.
If Spurrier came back to the NFL and was willing to adapt, I think he could be successful...but I don't see that happening in the near future. He'll go back to college ball for at least a few years first.
