So long, Champ. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of town.

Cush 03-03-2004 01:15 AM

7 years, 63 million, 18 million signing bonus

JWsleep 03-03-2004 01:18 AM

And it's NOT backloaded! He's getting paid up front. Wow.

CrazyCanuck 03-03-2004 01:41 AM

If you include the roster bonus it's really a $23M signing bonus. Wow.

From what I can tell, our deal with Portis looks a lot better.

MTK 03-03-2004 08:30 AM

See ya Champ, it was a fun ride, wish you would have stuck around because things are just getting started here!

Best of luck to him, no hard feelings from me.

Back to reality folks for a moment here.

More than a few people who wanted Champ to stay here posted notes in this forum saying that the offer from the Skins (9 yrs and $58M and $14M signing bonus) was all he could get and he would not get more anywhere else. Take a look folks; he knew the market better than the Redskins did.

Oh, and for the other folks who say that Danny Boy never gets outbid, please remember this one. Champ's deal beats the Redskins' offer three ways. More bonus money, more total value, shorter deal.

Having said that, even though I wanted the Skins to resign Champ, this is more than the Skins could have afforded to spend on him. I am not arguing that they should have done that. But let's be a little more realistic about players knowing what they can get on the "open market" and about Danny Boy's invincibility in the free agent business.

Write it down, right now!

1. He will not play out that contract in Denver!
2. He will be disappointing in Denver!
3. Bronco fans will long to have Clinton Portis back!

sportscurmudgeon 03-03-2004 11:22 AM

Iowa Skins Fan:

1. Of course he will renegotiate the contract in Denver - probably after year #3 - or they will have to make him a cap causalty. That is why he wanted a shorter deal instead of the 9 year deal originally offered by the Skins. The shorter contract becomes "burdensome" a lot faster. Do you think Jeremiah Trotter will play out his deal here without a restructuring? How about LaVar? That is the way contracts are done in the NFL at the moment for star players.

2. He will be an excellent cornerback in Denver just as he was and would have been here in Washington.

3. If the vaunted "Broncos' system" turns another of their RBs into a 1300 - 1600 yard rusher, they won't care if Portis is gone. If it doesn't...

I agree about what people said, I was not one of them. I did however think our original deal was too much, and now I feel the Broncos paid WAAY too much for Champ. He's a CB for pete's sake. We're getting Portis at about 3 mil a year cheaper. Portis is much more valuable. I loved Champ, great corner, but no corner...I repeat, NO CORNER is worth that amount of money.
What ever happened to team loyalty?

I'd argue that Deion in his prime was worth that kind of $$. He was a true gamebreaker, Champ is a shutdown corner but he doesn't make teams pay for throwing his way the way Deion did.

cpayne5 03-03-2004 12:45 PM

Exactly, teams so rarely threw to his side of the field that he had few gamebreaking opportunities.

Redskins_P 03-03-2004 12:56 PM

Get over it

To all my fellow loyal Skins fans:

Let's get over Champ. PLEASE! He did not want to be here, and we have one of the best RB's in the league in exchange. Jansen resigned and restructured his contract, Lavar also did the same thing. Why? Because they are team players who are loyal to the Redskins organization. Champ was unhappy since the beginning of the season, and you could tell that he wanted out.

Now I have figure out what to do with my Champ Bailey jersey.

Sadistic Jeff 03-03-2004 01:06 PM

Well, here we go. it's all ironed out. The bottom line is, we get a younger/bigger impact player CHEAPER. I will go on record saying that i think Champ was slightly overrated, and on top of it, no matter HOW much talent he had or didn't have, we got a young stud of a back that'll have his hands on the ball 20-30 times a game, with the chance of scoring at any moment. So, for all those people who knocked this deal, it's not looking so bad now, is it?
