I need to get a wisdom tooth pulled

I went to the dentist for a cleaning today and it turns out I have a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth, and the dentist suggests getting it pulled vs. getting it filled since it's a 'non-functional tooth' as he put it.

Give me the truth, how much does getting a tooth pulled really hurt? Do they knock you out for it? I'm really not looking forward to this.

The wife had her's out a few years ago and honestly she got put out. I've talked to a lot of friends over the years who have been awake and while you can't feel anything, it's the dentist basically putting his leg on your chest to pull those bitches out that makes you ill.

When I got mine out about 4 or 5 years ago they knocked me out completely and I really didn't think the pain was too bad.
I did it over the summer in college, so the night before I rented like 10 movies because I figured I'd be in pain for 2 days, but that wasn't the case for me. There was obviously some discomfort and eating food wasn't that much fun but I really thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was.

When I was in the Navy in Keflavik, Iceland, I had to have all 4 of mine removed. The only anesthetic I received was novacaine and all of the roots on each of the teeth were hooked under. The dentist literally had to break the teeth into pieces in my mouth and suck them out with this vacuum thing.

It was the worst feeling I've ever had in my life. I can still hear them breaking. Like TMC said, the dentist/torturer puts his weight against you while he tries to get enough leverage to break your teeth. After it was over, I got a prescription for percaset (sp?) which I'm happy to report is a wonderful drug.

PS- I doubt they do this at civilian dentists so you should be fine.

Ok I have had all 4 taken out at seperate times and I have never been put under. Matty is this a bottom wisdom tooth or a upper wisdom tooth it makes a difference in the pain cat.?

I had my top two canines pulled when I was about 12. I had novacaine and NO2, and I didn't feel anything. There was also no pain afterwards, when the novacaine wore off.

I also had my wisdom teeth removed. All four, at the same time. They had not broken the surface, and the doctor had to cut into my gums. I had an IV for that one, and I was out cold, seconds after receiving the IV. I didn't feel any part of the procedure, and the pain and recovery time was minimal.

bottom left. It's all the way through and not impacted at all.

I think you're fortunate that it's not impacted. Impacted can be painful, very painful. I had three pulled out a couple of years ago. Local anesthetic. Not a pleasant experience.

The jaw I am sorry to say is the hard one to get but, on the bright side getting the needle in your jaw gums is much easier then in the roof of your mouth.

Outside of the shoot none of it really hurts to be honest. You are sore afterwards around your mouth from all the tugging. If you can do it without getting put under that is your best choice for a speedy recover.

After they pull it be prepared to have gauze in your mouth for the next hour. I hope you like the taste of blood. Here is a hint take like three advils before hand this way it gives you some time when you are waiting for the pain killers to kick in after the pull.

Overall the process is pretty painless, it just more the recover and inconvince of not being able to chew stuff that is the pain. Don't let that cavity go! That is where the really pain is, one of my wisdoms was apseits (sp) and it felt like a hornets nest was lodge up in my jaw!

Also last word, keep that area clean after the pull! You don't want dry socket to occur, which is a whole another story.

I've got two impacted and the others just need to come out. I'm getting them done in a couple of weeks and really not looking forward to it.

My cousin just had his down with only the local anesthetic, and they only gave him Tylenol with codeine which apparently sucks. I'm really not very squeamish when it comes to things like this, but I'd really prefer to be knocked out.

As long as they give me something better than Tylenol with codeine... I guess it won't be too bad.

Maybe I should buy a 360 before I get them done so I've got something to do while incapacitated.

Do they still give laughing gas? I could go for some of that rather than getting knocked out cold. I'll just get a few balloons filled up and I'll be ready to go! ;)

I had 4 that were impacted and they needed to be cut out. The actual procedure doesn't hurt because I was out cold. The couple days after the fact is what hurts. It's manageable though! Don't be a puss (hehehehe). Seriously, its not too horrible but I would be lying to you if I said it didn't hurt for a few days.

I had to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed before I got braces. Trust me it doesn't hurt. My mom wouldn't let them give me anything before they pulled the first two because she's all anti-drugs, so i got to experience what it was like wide awake. All they do is put a little clamp thingy in your mouth, and they grab and wiggle and wiggle some more until it's finally loose enough to take it out. I felt some minor pain but it wasn't anything a grown man can't handle. The only thing that sucks is you can't eat for like a day, and they put this big cotton ball in the big gap where the tooth was, and I had to keep my mouth pressed closed to hold the cotton ball in place to soak up the blood.
