Another TE signs with the skins...
Washington signed tight end Sean Brewer yesterday. Brewer spent last season in Atlanta in a very limited role and faces stiff competition to make the roster.
Uhh... wow... gibbs... loves... tight ends...

SmootSmack 07-22-2004 01:41 AM

I guess theoretically he fills Ware's spot on the roster, but it's not like we didn't have an overabundance of tight ends already.

That Guy 07-22-2004 03:01 AM

its still kind of insane... 4-5 of them are probably going to be packing within six weeks...

Hogskin 07-22-2004 09:27 AM

Yep, Brewer is obviously only training camp fodder. They apparently want a deep group there for their practices. 2-3 will be gone. They will probably keep 2 blocking TE's and 2 H-backs active each week, and may keep one on the practice squad.

Bergman14 07-22-2004 01:18 PM

this is perplexing indeed, but I guess it does fit into the mold of the 2-3 years before hell plan. Bring in the too many, and figure out who can get it done, no matter what the cost

BossHog 07-22-2004 02:18 PM

Who's been more banged up Brewer or Springs?

I'm not sure what that all means, but it seems to me that every team overloads (to one degree or another) at ALL positions going into training camp. It does several good things, primarily providing competition to encourage the best performance from everyone, providing plenty of the much-needed "warm bodies" to fill out second units for drills, and providing emergency fill-ins in the event of injuries. Watch each of the NFL cutdown deadlines in the last couple weeks of training camps and notice how many guys get cut from EVERY NFL team. Then you will realize that every team does this.

Actually, our TE position appears more "overstocked" than it is. Most teams today have only one TE on the field for most plays. Since Gibbs very frequently has a blocking TE and a TE used as an H-back both on the field, he needs a deeper TE corps going into training camp. Most teams will be stocked with 5 now, and cut 2. Gibbs has 7 and will cut 2 or 3. Of course, there was the other extreme when Moon QB'd the Oilers' Run 'n Gun - NO TE's, but a ton of WR's.

And, by the way, you should not put so much stock in the 2006 disaster theories of some of the nervous, unproven writers. Go back to their articles the year Deion and several others were signed, and they said the exact same things would happen 3 years later. That time has passed, and look at what is happening. I feel the Redskin front office has proven themselves on this one, and will continue to do so. Their bonus-laden contracts with a huge salary bubble down the road works. When the bublle year arrives, you renegotiate or trade (as in Bailey for Portis). Either way, you are very far from hell.

FRPLG 07-22-2004 05:30 PM

I have said it before and will say it again...THE REDSKINS MAKE A JOKE OF THE CAP YEAR AFTER YEAR. Doesn't it seem every year someone is spouting off about how we're gonna be in cap trouble? Last time we figured a way out and this time will be no different. There are 5-7 teams in the league that really lead the way when manipulating the cap and inventing creative ways around it. There are also 5-7 teams with no clue and these are the teams that the media talks about because it's a much better story. We may have a totally different team come 2006 but it will be as competitive on paper as this team is.

That Guy 07-22-2004 07:30 PM

I figure sooner or later the dead money will hurt us... not as in ruining the team, but it does give you less overall money to work with and cause further creative accounting... I haven't really studied it though, so honestly I can't have an informed opinion.

I think the pats brought in an insane number for summer work and minicamps though... 30+ undrafted guys... even if you cut them, you have a general idea who you could call up from taco bell if things really hit the fan (like hasslebeck).

sportscurmudgeon 07-22-2004 11:21 PM

In the NBA, Portland signs all the druggies.

In the NFL, the Raiders sign all the sociopaths.

In college football, Florida State signs all the ... well they call them the Criminoles.

In college basketball, Cincinnati signs all the MENSA members.

So what's the big deal with the Skins signing all the tight ends? It could be a whole lot worse. They could be out signing Bruce Smith for an encore performance. :nono:

That Guy 07-22-2004 11:46 PM

speaking of which, i was really pretty disgusted with his selfishness last season... the sack record isnt even that important (since many players didn't get sacks tracked), and reggie was much better at it anyways.

SkinsRock 07-23-2004 01:33 PM

Yes, we are overstocked at TE, but how many FB's do we have? Rock and Sellers. The overload of TE's is bcause Gibbs uses the H-back instead of a Fullback, and most H-back are officially called a TE. Sellers is playing at H-back and Rock will be more of a RB like he was last year. Plus, everone overstocks before TC...

joecrisp 07-23-2004 03:23 PM

Exactly, SkinsRock. The Skins currently have eight TE/H-backs on the roster, with three of those definitely being slotted in the H-back role: Cooley, Sellers and Kozlowski. Brewer's signing makes up for the release of Kevin Ware, and provides the necessary depth to fill out the 2nd, 3rd and 4th units, as well as special teams, for training camp scrimmages and preseason games.

The Skins are also currently carrying 12 wide receivers (more than twice as many as they'll likely keep) and 11 linebackers (another significant overload). One of the major reasons for this is that players at these positions comprise a large portion of the special teams units, and you always want plenty of depth for special teams-- particularly during the preseason.

That Guy 07-23-2004 07:24 PM

brewer is more of a blocker from what i hear.

joecrisp 07-23-2004 07:40 PM
brewer is more of a blocker from what i hear.
That's what I would assume, based on what I've read of him. I haven't seen much of him in action, and he certainly hasn't done anything notable as a receiver. Sounds like he was a pretty good blocker in college. I would think he falls in line behind Rasby, Baxter and Royal at the blocking TE spot.
