A Preseason question

Everyone is putting the Skins on the hot seat because of our preseason. I was wondering if a statistic has been compiled that shows the if a higher winning percentage in the preseason colerlates to a higher winning percentage in the regular season. To me that would be a bad stat, because the way we are losing in the preseason is worst than losing when your offense and D is playing well, but it still would be an interesting stat. So back to the question, does anyone know of a stat like that?

Well that is what I think the answer is, but if that is the case then the statistic should be around even about if a winning preseason percentage results in a winning percentage in the regular season.

Saunders said it himself,

"The last team here that went 0-4 was 1982, and their next 32 games after that, their record was 28-4," Saunders said. "So I'd like to look at the idea that preseason might not equate with success during the season. We're heading down the right path."

I could be wrong, but wasn't our preseason records for Joe Gibbs 3 SBs something like 0-4, 1-3, 1-3?

It is not a debate, and I was referring to an overall stat for the entire NFL complied over years. That way it would be statistically significant, due to a larger sample size.

It is not so much the win loss record, most of the playing time is being done by players just trying to make the roster.

What is alarming is the starting offense has not been able to move the ball effectively at all. Now that is nothing to get overly concerned about because if you look at 2005, the Redskins came out a little cold, but really turned it up in the second half of the season.

The biggest concern is the health of the team coming into the start of the regular season. Everything else is just academic.

You can't look at it like that either. You would have to sample coaches with the same preseason philosophy. Some make it a point to win in preseason. That means game planning and showing thier true O and D. Others (like ours) don't game plan unless they think the team really needs to build its confidence (like against Pittsburg last preseason). They hide thier O and D and don't worry about the W. I think you can compare Gibbs or Saunders preseason to season records and find something. Likewise, Parcells, Coughlin, Cowher have all been in the league long enough to establish thier own trends.

Key positions, such as RB (Portis) can significantly effect us. Although I feel we are more than deep at that position, I feel better about our chances with Portis in there.

Having a larger sample size, ie... eliminating our coaching staff from the equation... negates the very information your trying to un-earth. Different coaches have different pre-season strategies...therefore you just clouding your "sample" with random variables that make it meaningless. It's kind of a pointless thing to find... the only conclusion you could reach would be how coaches fare in the regular season when their strategy is to lose preseason games.

And that one doesn't work because how many coaches just lost the games because their strategies didn't work. I'm now going drink excessively if you would excuse me.
