Patten's Smart Ass Remark

Taken from the WP:

Wide receiver David Patten said the same. Patten signed a five-year,$13.5 million deal with a $3.5 million signing bonus. "They didn't come to me," Patten said. "And I didn't volunteer. Would you volunteer to give your money back?"

Does that not rub anyone else the wrong way?

I mean he could have just stopped at, "They haven't approached me."

Yeah, could have. Doesn't rub me the wrong way though . . . I wouldn't be lining up to give back any money either, though restructuring generally means the player gets bonus money in lieu of base salary so it works out for both sides and he wouldn't be "giving money back" in his words. Doesn't strike me as so horrible though.

Meh. Still, you just don't want people saying crap like that. I mean did that serve any purpose at all besides showing us that he doesn't seem willing to restructure?

first few posts i didnt think much of it but i also agree with malcolm. no need for him to say it like that.

maybe he knows it's bc we'd be using the money to get a real #2.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying cut Patten, but just something that stuck out.

He's right, who does volunteer to give money back so his comment does not bother me at all. Its just business and if he does not look out for his interests nobody else will.

What I do find interesting is that sports fans always complain about athletes speaking in cliches and say nothing responses so now when an athlete actually speaks in a candid manner he gets ripped. No wonder athletes never say much when they are interviewed.

come on why make a mountain out of nothing.if your company went around cutting pay to certain employees, would you volunteer?i know its not a pay cut, just moving money around, but come on

caught my attention too & didn't look good on paper, but maybe he was saying it in a lighter manner than it appeared.
What worrys me is that he said at the end of last year that he was healthy enough to play & sounded unhappy that he'd been put on IR. I recall also reading that he felt he didn't get the ball thrown his way enough. We brought him on board cause he's a vet w/a winning history & still has some speed. we certainly don't need any problems cause it ain't like he's a feature reciever in this league.

11 or 12 players restructured for the good of the team. Then Patten adopts this me-first, F-the team attidue? As I was reading it my first thought was cut the bastard, but Coach Joe will do what is best...

I'm certain that the sole reason those 11 or 12 players restructured was not because it was good for the team. If it didnt work for them then they were not going to do it.

Of course like I mentioned in a previous post they will say all the good for the team bs because thats what fans want to hear and will keep them from getting ripped.
