Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
Clinton Portis was at T.O.'s birthday party and when someone asked him about Owens he said that he would be a great teammate. It's sad that he thought T.O. would bring alot to the Skins.
Portis endorsed S.Moss coming to Washington and it worked out, even when everyone was pissed because he didn't come to the off-season pratice. Question: Simple yes or no, would you support T.O. in a Redskins Uniform? |
Question: Simple yes or no, would you support T.O. in a Redskins Uniform?
You can't just give a simple answer to this question. I would say Yes, but only under very strict conditions. If I were Gibbs I'd have him come to my office and tell him that basically if he wants to play football he does it on my terms and on a VERY short leash. Structure his contract VERY carefully and based almost entirely on incentives. He misses a team meeting: benched. Don't bring your playbook: benched. Show up with a crummy attitude: benched. Park in the wrong parking spot: benched. I think the key to TO is an unbelievably careful contract structure. Of course this only works if he has nowhere else to play and is desperate to play. My guess is there is some team out there willing to drop a lot of cash on him to give it a shot, and of course they'll end up with the same problems. It's no surprise: pay some guy $58 million or whatever his contract was and then worship him like some kind of god and yeah, you'll get an arrogant primadonna - no shocker there. SOMEone has to bring this guy back down to earth. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
I have this sneaky feeling that T.O. will be with Michael Vick next year. If they had someone like him, their offense would be very difficult to stop. But, then again T.O. would probably get mad everytime he thought he was open and Vick took off running!

Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
I do feel that TO will be in Atlanta next year. However, He will take what ever contract offers him the most money. No question TOs ability on the field is unmatched. But he is 31 and will be 32 next season. Generally WRs lose a step here and there when getting that old. Exception of a few, and TO could be one of the exceptions. But I just cant see the atitude coming here. Gibbs has worked so hard in getting a unity amongst these guys that TO, i believe would cause that to go down the toiler. Especially the first time the offense goes into a slump and he isn't getting "his balls". Or the D, gives up some games like it did in that stretch. I dont think the fans would really welcome him either. I still remember going to games when Dieon was here and he was mostly booed from out fans. Just dont think is a wise decision.

Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
Honestly, if there was stuff written in his contract about voiding it if he does somthing detrimental to the team, as a big of a peice of crap I think that guy is.....I think he could be exactly what this team needs.
|
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
NO, NO & NO.
How many more teams does this guy have to burn before people finally wake up and realize he is nothing but a cancer and a selfish media whore. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
Where's the poll?
I vote no. His size and skills are undeniably intriguing, but this team is starting to create its own identity, and he would crush that. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
When all this TO stuff started up a few weeks ago I said TO would be a good pick up for the skins and was told by everyone on this site I was nuts and no way would this happen. Now CP comes out and say TO would be a good get for the skins. There is a real chance this will happen because a main player on the team (speaking for more than himself I'm sure) think TO would work and the owner loves free agents and loves to spend money on them.
TO was not a problem last year with Philly and put his career on the line in the Super Bowl. Had the Eagles given him the $ TO would not have been a problem this year and Philly would be in the playoff hunt. All the Skins have to do is give TO a 1 year deal, pay him the $ then sit back and enjoy the TDs. Its a cant lose for the Skins. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
This is an excerpt from the ExtremeSkins chat with Joe Bugel. Doesn't look like Gibbs is interested at all.
From TheSteve The Redskins could use a dominating possession Wide Receiver like Terrell Owens, who would be a great compliment to Santana Moss. Is there any situation where you would approve of Terrell Owens on this football team if it so happened that he were released? Why or why not?

Joe Bugel As of now, I think we’ve heard so many stories about that young man…I don’t think anyone questions his football ability and how great he is as a football player. But in the locker room, off the field, there are some issues there. I think he’s going to have to really clean up his act, try to find some agents and people to surround himself that are very very good sound people that can help him become a stronger young man off the football field. The biggest thing that’s hurt Terrell Owens is his mouth. I mean, he can play, he can back it up by playing. But off the field, and what he says about players and coaches, I think that he’s going to have a hard time. Somebody’s going to take a chance on him, as of now I don’t believe the Redskins will.
http://www.extremeskins.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131358 I don't see it happening. As for my own personal opinion, his disruptions would only be worth dealing with if we could have him for less than $2 million per season. That of course would NEVER happen. So basically no, I don't want any part of him. |

That sounds like a great idea - let's let the player extort the team. TO took the pay to play in Philly. Philly took TO at a salary they were comfortable with? They wanted him back because they were desperate and their backs were against the wall with McNabb out. TO and good teammate should never be mentioned in the same breath. I don't know how anyone can look at this guy's antics and say yeah, I'd want that on my team. Please. |

You should know better - this isn't that type of situation. Neither Philly nor TO said "Let's play one year on this contract and then revisit it to see if it's fair." TO wasn't in his last year of his contract, and there wasn't a salary cap reason to redo his contract. TO threw a hissy-fit and held out for more money, and Philly's front office, much to their credit, said "no player is bigger than the team". |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
I think TO's next contract will have many behavioural clauses, coupled with his age and he will be a model teamate for about two years. If the Skins got him you would win the Division hands down. Dallas would win the Division hands down if they got him. he would change the balance of power in the NFC east.

TO is a cancer because of exactly this reason! He has created a divide in the locker room. McNabb hates him and wants him gone. Trotter loves him and wants him to stay. And there's a bunch of other guys on each side of the fence. You're telling me that because a portion of the players want to keep him, that's a good sign??? You want all of your players on the same page as the coaches. TO caused that huge rift. Reid and McNabb want him gone, and a bunch of other players want him back. No matter how you cut it, that ain't good. |

I think most contracts that are renegiotated are not planned to be renegiotated but the teams see the value in keeping the player happy and the player sees that the team values him. That's all TO was asking for after he put his career on the line to try to get Philly a championship. I said Philly played hard a$$ and I was only half correct because that whole thing was handled really bad by both sides. I dont think TO would handle it like that again and any team dealing with him will approach their deal differently. If the skins do pick up TO it will be great to see everyone on this site start talking about how great TO is. I guarantee that will happen. |

I dunno about that - players don't call the plays. My point is that I'm sure a lot of them see the talent but aren't able to truly appreciate the destructive influence on the locker room. Without that "big picture" perspective, I don't put a whole lot of stock in what the players consider to be "good personnel moves". |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
YES
I think it could work. There will be stipulations in his contract for his behavior. Most of the reason he was mad in Philly is because they were too cheap and did not pay him. I know he signed the contract and should of honored it but things change when you see things from a different side. He cant be a cancer all the time. If a team takes care of him he will be happy. I see no reason why the Redskins cant take care of him. Who could touch us with Moss on one side and Owens on the other. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
We can't afford him next year. We don't need the best receiver in football to compliment Moss, just a good one who is reliable and can make the big catch every now and then. I wish we could have picked up Jurevicious this year instead of Patten. He's been one of my favorites since he had that ridiculous catch against Troy Vincent. Somebody like him, though, would be great. Plug somebody like that in, and wait for Andre Johnson's contract with the Texans to expire.

Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
The other day Portis and Santana Moss where invited to TO's birthday party. In the back of my mind I was wondering if there was something up with that. Portis was there but I'm not sure if Moss went.

BS. Owens "put his career" on the line for his own personal glory, which is the motivation for everything he does. Owens is the ultimate antithesis of a team player - he is in this game solely for money and his own glory, not the team's. You've got to be the most naive football fan around to think for an instant that Owens "put his career on the line" for the good of the team. It's also quite unfortunate that there are fans like yourself that support such self-serving antics. Being a die-hard Skins fan I have hated Philly most of my life, but I have a newfound respect for Reid and the team owner for standing up to such childish behavior as Owens' and make an example of him. ::sigh:: Whatever happened to guys playing because they loved the game and made a more-than-adequate living doing so? |

Since when is $42 million for seven years and a $10 million signing bonus "cheap"??? If that's "cheap" then sign me up for a fraction of "cheap" as my salary. |

But the fact remains that he created a huge rift in the Eagles locker room. Is their locker room divided, or is it not? Are you suggesting that our locker room wouldn't become divided? Your argument isn't making sense. |

Under these conditions yes.
* You have a problem, shut your mouth. * You want the ball, don't ask for it. * You want to win, we all do but losses are part of the game so shut your mouth. * Just shut your mouth and play! |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
From a talent aspect, absolutely. However, there is more to being a football player than what goes on on the football field. This team is just now getting into the mode of playing like a team - there doesn't need to be any distractions to hender that.

Two totally different things. I think all players play for their personal satisfaction within the context of the team. TO plays a team sport so the only way for him to get a championship is for the team to win it. I doubt any fan of any team would care what a player's motivation is for playing hard and winning when the team is hoisting the championship trophy. If you think today's players care about the team more than they care about their own glory or the $ you are the naive one. Aside from Tom Brady I cant think of a single player that has stayed with his team for less money, thats why free agency is so rampant. The NFL is a meat market and if they players dont make as much $ as they can as fast as they can the team wont be do anything to help when they hit hard times (remember Mike Webster & the Steelers?). How many people in other lines of work would stay at a lower paying job when the company down the street wants to give them a 25% raise? I doubt you would stay for the good of the company. Why do we think ballplayers would be any different. |

YES
I would take TO. I think this year will humble him in my opinion. His mouth got him in trouble, and jepordized his career, you think that doesn't play in his mind. The next team that gets him is gonna have a steal because he will be smarter in what he says. He wants to be payed like a top ten reciever, I can't see why he shouldn't. HE IS A TOP TEN WIDEOUT. Can we give him the money, I don't know. I know we can pay him what he wants, but can we fit him under the cap? If you look at what he would bring to the team. ~Moss would no longer be double or triple teamed. He would free up the run for portis, and with weapons like that Rogers has no option but to succed and become better. If we can keep Greg Williams here for next year, we would become a instant superbowl contender, can't deny the potiential |
If TO played like he did last year the skins locker room would not be divided.
And if a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass when it hops. TO was playing like he was last year until he opened his big fat mouth one too many times and got suspended. In 7 games this year he had 763 yards and 6 TDs. When you project that to a 16 game season, he was performing just as well as he did last year. No matter what happens, as long as TO is playing he's going to put up crazy good numbers. But the question is what will his mouth do to the team? In the Eagles' case, it divided the locker room, resulting in Trotter speaking out against Reid. He'd never play for a one-year deal because he knows he can get a bigger bonus from some other team out there. It's too big a risk to sign him to big money. |
Re: Portis Endorses T.O. Coming To Washington, Would You?
NO! H#LL NO! UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, NO!
TO is the biggest cancer in sports. He would completely undermine anything the coaching staff is trying to accomplish. Look at the wake he personnelly has created in San Francisco and Philadelphia. |
