Ex Cardinal DB died in combat
Pat Tillman, who gave up a lucrative NFL contract with the Phoenix Cardinals to join the Army Rangers, has been killed in Afghanistan, a report says.
In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Tillman decided to turn down a three-year, $3.6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army. © 2004 NBC Sports.com This is really too bad. I rembember when he rejected the Cards contract to serrve. My heart goes out to his family and the other families in the military. Also a BIG thank you to those who serve out country. |
I'm sure he would'nt have wanted all the attention this is going to get, but it was special how he walked away from his first big payday. With all the deaths this month we may be talking about the wrong draft.
God bless him and his family, and his brothers still in the field. |
This is really a sad, sad day. For some reason, I was just looking at stuff online about Todd Beamer ( The Flight 93 Hero from 9/11), and just came here and read that. I'll never forget what I thought to myself when the news of him turning down that contract to go to the army broke. I was just shocked and that someone would give all that up to go to war. People are just special like that. Somthing really needs to be done about this war, its getting rediculous. R.I.P bud.
|
This is a tragedy for a number of reasons. I hope that this report has been confirmed (though I've heard it from a number of outlets now) so that it doesn't cause the Tillman family any undue anguish. The Tillman family is in my prayers.
|
war is disgusting. this is terribly sad.
|
That is one awesome American and atragic loss for our great Country as a whole. As an ex-Marine [Marine for life actually] I'll be the first to admit that war is a Mother Fletcher.
May GOD bless and comfort his family in their time of need. This makes football seem like a silly game when you hear about stuff like this. peace :o( |
I was sitting here watching ESPN and quietly fuming about how ungrateful and whiny Eli Manning is for dissing SD. And then the story about Tillman hit. This was an honorable man. What he felt in his heart was more important than what filled his wallet and he was willing to give his life to prove it.
|
This is very sad indeed.
It's time like these that we should remember to thank BleedBurgundy and any other Warpathers who are serving or have served overseas for us |

I was so surprised by and encouraged to hear that Tillman turned down the $4 million deal to serve our country. Today is a very, very sad day, but it makes me realize how great our country is and how we should never forget those who die for it.

Truly a shocking and sad news flash....
RIP Pat you've earned repsect thoughout this whole county by walking away from the NFL to pursue what you believed in and many of us on this board, including me wish we had the balls you possess. God Bless |
It is a sad day today. RIP and god bless.
|
This is incredibly sad news. My sympathies and prayers are to his family and I want to thank everyone else who serves our great country in this way.
God speed, Pat. |
wow, my heart goes out to his family, terrible news indeed.
|
It's very sad to hear the he was killed today. After giving up so much to defend our great county. May our thought and prayers got out to not only his friends and family. But the families to all who have perished.
"MAY GOD BLESS THEM ALL" |
Today, Pat Tillman is a hero in a way that no mere football player can ever be. Sometimes I think we spend too much time cheering on the wrong guys.
May God bless Pat and his family, and may God bless America. --Phin |
What a waste of a human life ... war truly is the greatest evil on this earth. Peace to Pat Tillman and his family.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing, which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than him." -- John Stewart Mill (1806-1873)
RIP |
It's people like Mr. Tillman who are the heart and soul of our country. When I first heard about him going to Iraq I thought about how strongly he must feel about serving his country. It takes a person with some very strong beliefs in my opinion to risk your life for your country while turning down a chance to live comfortably by playing a game. My prayers and respects go out to his friends and family. RIP

War is sometimes the result of the greatest evils on earth and not the greatest evil itself.

I'm not going to debate this here. Pat Tillman did what he thought was right and I commend him for it. It's just a shame, that's all.

I agree and think that it would be an injustice to him to do so right now. "What we have done for ourselves dies alone with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal." -Albert Pike- |
To Pat Tillman:
Peace to your spirit, to your family and friends. Thank you. "Damn war to hell" - Me, 2004. |

A very fitting quote, sft&t. Army Ranger Pat Tillman is an immortal hero, and I can't find the words to express my gratitude and sorrow for the sacrifice he and others have so selflessly made for all of us. |

Amen to that JoeC - I think those words express the feelings just fine. |
Anyone remember how Simeon Rice said Tillman wasn't that good at football (though he had over 200 tackles - a franchise record - one year and 153 (3rd most in the league) in 2000), that he probably joined up because he watched too many Rambo movies? I sent my share of hate mail to Rice and I hope you all do the same.
|
Yeah, Ramseyfan. I did hear about that and I defintley dont agree with what he had to say. Its in the past now, this is about Pat Tillman and what he did. God Bless you, Pat.

Petition to Tagliabue...
I tripped across this petition to the NFL/Tagliabue while reading about him. I signed it.

I signed it too, nice find DBB thanks for posting that.
|
My deepest sympathies go out to the Tillman family. Pat was truely an American Hero and the petition should be signed by all in this board. It's people like Pat that allow us to do the things we do everyday.

Simeon Rice probably feels bad enough right about now ... there's enough hate in the world without us all sending the man nasty emails. Lord knows I've said some stupid things without thinking and put my foot in my mouth countless times. We should cut him some slack. |

RIP
Is that supposed to justify his death or make us feel guilty about not enlisting? I find your quote highly inappropriate and devoid of any value. |
Rice has a right to be an idiot, he voiced his opinion. I hope he understands that Pat Tillman paid the ultimate price for him to do so.

Maybe he understands, maybe he doesn't. I don't see what gets accomplished by sending him hate mail, except creating more anger and hatred. This is the type of crap that plants the seed of violence and war in the first place. |
Let's not make a debate out of this tragedy. This thread should be devoted to thoughts about Pat Tillman, his family, and those that have made similar sacrifices.
We can debate the political and philosophical issues surrounding the war in another thread. As far as Simeon Rice goes, I don't think his petty and thoughtless comments are worthy of attention or debate. Thanks |

RIP
TREMENDOUS Brudlee! Great quote. |
Regardless of political beliefs, the mourning is the focus of this day... thoughts with the tillman family.
|
Yes it's a great quote. Gandhi and MLK certainly were miserable creatures, weren't they? History shows us that you can "fight" for things and win without resorting to violence.
|
I had no intention of angering those who disagree with the quote (or the quoter). Pat Tillman believed in his course enough to lay down his life for it - as did both Gandhi and MLK. Whether or not anyone here agrees with him, his sacrifice was noble.

What is it about the word FIGHT, you don't understand? miserable creature's huh, I guess we might as well throw George Washington, abraham lincoln, franklin roosevelt, and IKE, in there as well. My heart goes out to the Tillman's who raised such courageous children, with such conviction for thier country!!!!!!!!! |
