Drafting a guard in the first round.
I've been thinking about guards quite a bit leading leading up to this draft.
Lance Zuerlien has us taking Brandon Scherff with our first round pick. Some have said "you dont draft guards in the first round". I did some checking and went back five years to see how guards went in the first round. 2014 - 0 2013 - 3 2012 - 2 2011 - 2 2010 - 2 (one of which was Mike Iupati at #17) A couple were top half round. Most were middle and back half. So they do go in the first round to some degree. The question is do we want to pay #5 money if we do take one? |

IMO the best guard value spot this year is late first/early second. |
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
These guys have Scherff as the 5th best talent in the draft.

Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
I think we may end up trading back a few spaces, I worry if doing so will make us miss out on a game changer to line up opposite of Kerrigan, I say no to guard at #5 as well.
|
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Drafting a guard later in the first is fine, but not high. Regardless of how talented Scherff is, taking him at #5 over a guy who could potentially be an elite pass rusher would be stupid.
|
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Top 10 player needs to be a high impact player, give me a front 7 guy with this pick. U should be able to get a solid Oline player with our second pick
|
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
5 or 6 years from now would you be OK with giving this OG top dollar, top OT $$$ to resign him. If you say yes then do it. I'm saying NO trade back maybe then yes.
|
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
If we stay at #5 I think it will be to draft an exceptional player at a high impact position. In our case, that would probably be an OLB to play opposite Kerrigan. I'm not OK with picking an OG at #5 but what do I know?
If there isn't a player on the board that SM thinks is worthy of a Top 5 pick, then I hope he'll try to trade down to the 10-15 range and draft his highest rated player on the board, regardless of position. I'm fine with an OG in the 10-15 range. We need to get better everywhere. There will probably be OL's available who are worthy of being picked in the second round. |

2014 - 1
Correction. There was a guard drafted in the 1st in 2014 and it was the Dallas Cowboys when they drafted Zack Martin. |
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
If Mariota slips to us at #5, trading down at that point could be very rewarding. QB desperate teams with a lot of picks like Cleveland two picks in the top 20 could make interesting trade partner.
Then we pick schref. |
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
We suck all over the place. Draft the BPA. Plain and simple.

This. We have too many holes to focus on one position. Start piling up as many talented young men as you can and sift through the poor ones. In my opinion every position could use a talent infusion so whatever position they draft I just want quality players who will be here long term. |

He was listed as a tackle when he was drafted. 2014 NFL Draft Tracker – NFL.com |

Then we pick schref.
That would be awesome! If that were to happen, I think SM would take full advantage of a trade partner. Here's a thought: What if Mariota is on the board at #5 and we take him? One more thought: I saw a recent photo of Jameis Winston with his shirt off. He has gained bad weight and looks soft in the middle. Will teams fear that he'll go "Jamarcus Russell" on them, causing Mariota to be drafted before Winston? |
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Eeeek.....
If we drafted Mariota this message board would be a freakin zoo at feeding time. |
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Rumor has it the Eagles and Jets have a deal in place to send Mariotta to Philly at 6 if he's there. Not only does that give teams incentive to hop up to 5 if they want a QB, it also lets us shaft over Philly... That would make me soooo happy.
|
Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Except I am giddy with excitement that Philly might make a trade the farm deal for Mariotta. I watched enough of him this year to come away with the impression that he's a QB I want a rival to sell out for.

Could this be the ultimate 2015 draft scenario for a Skins fan? That would make me chuckle in my sleep. Heh-heh. |

Plus Martiota looks like a systems guy, and that system is not the pro system we will be running. That would be a mistake for us to take him. He would be another project that is years away if he played in our pro system. As everyone knows we have basic fundamental needs, OL, DB, Pass rush needs that need to be addressed BEFORE we take yet another Qb high in the draft. I have a hunch one of our 3 QB's will pan out well enough to get us winning again if surrounded by a good team. Which means patching those huge holes in our starting lineup. i feel like we will get the biggest bang for our buck by getting a RT, OG, FS and CB. That will go along way (farther) then getting Mariotta and watching him get killed behind a terrible O-line. We have to fix the O-line and DBackfield. That is the #1 priority in my opinion. |

Except we drafted a tackle. ;)

We got the best guard in the draft.
Which we needed. You guys should listen to your Uncle Alvin more often. :oink: |

How about when we had a chance to get Alex Mack instead of Orakpo.

Alvin you def get kudos. Grant on Grant & Danny brought up a good point someone told him .... moving Schreff to RG doesnt look nearly as bad right now bc Morgan Moses has stepped up at RT. If Moses is not playing well and we are rotating guys at RT and having to max protect on that side etc .... drafting what you initially thought was your RT at No. 5 but then moving Schreff to RG would be viewed as a fail. |

I'm gud, cause Moses is playing outstanding at right tackle. Schreff and Moses at the right side has been ten times better than last year. Hail! |

LOVE.....the Mauler!!!

Re: Drafting a guard in the first round.
Yea, no doubt I couldnt have been this cocky if Moses hadnt been at least somewhere above average.

Just give Bill Callahan whatever he wants. Money, high draft picks, forty virgins, Chico's first born.

I agree, but am confused that they are protecting Matt Ryan, who seems to be doing an ok job getting his receiver's the ball |

To be fair, the Eagles and Giants pass rush isn't exactly scary |

Polumbus doesn't start

You are right, he only played on 3 snaps (i had to look) - I must have watched just that part of the game, because the announcer pointed out that Chester and Polumbus both came from Washington. |
