Y! SPORTS
That WR list makes me froth at the mouth, so many options! But the ones I really like, i.e. Decker, Maclin, Edelman, Jacoby Jones, Boldin.. I'm sure they'll all be re-signed. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
The only FAs I'd be willing to overpay for is either Maclin or Nicks, but Nicks could be out there a while and you might not even need to overpay him.
Guards list is very blah. Ah well, looks like a Chad Rinehart reunion. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I wouldn't mind seeing Alex Mack in the maroon and black but that likely won't happen.
McCluster could really help our return game. Verner at CB, Byrd or Ward at safety would be huge pickups...but all 3 may re-sign or be too pricey if they don't. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I would take an injury-prone Darren McFadden. I like his speed and athleticism and wouldn't mind seeing him spell Alf.
The recievers group is outrageous. Assuming that Decker and Boldin are re-signed, I would like for us to go after Maclin, James Jones, and Dexter McCluster. I like his speed and he would kill on bubble screens. O-Line we can go after Veldheer, Collins, Giacomini, finally ERic Winston, C Alex Mack. Overall, we should be able to get good quality players and starters in this FA class. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Also, Stevie Brown and Whitner for safety, re-sign Hall and pick up Tarell Brown at CB. Wishful thinking..
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Hopefully Allen goes by his reputation and is cheap and doesn't try to make any splashes. Just sign players for depth. Maybe get a cheap starter.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
We need to grab at least one of these corners:
Vontae Davis <<< this guy would be awesome Sam Shields Aquib Talib Recievers at least one of these guys: Eric Decker Riley Cooper Brandon LaFell Julian Edelman << return man also Dexter McCluster << return man also |
I'd like Decker but he won't leave manning, as for DBs yes we need to look at Byrd and ward for sure. I don't want bad signings but smart , there is a difference. We have the $$$

I don't mind 1 or 2 splashy but reasonable signings, and we're definitely hurting for a #2 WR (because Hankerson's NOT it. Sorry folks) and S/CB. |

FS Jairus Byrd CB Alterraun Verner C Alex Mack WR Jeremy Maclin T Eric Winston WR/KR Brandon Tate (Maybe, I would almost rather draft De'Anthony Thomas or La'Damian Washington) There is my FA wish list. |

I'd inquire on Hakeem Nicks and see what the price is. Mostly likely it's gonna be a "prove it" contract, which would be worth it imo. Thats pretty much it for the skill positions, main focus should be trenches and Linebacker. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Some juicy WR, CB and O-line choices.
I want Veldheer and Mack first. A #2 WR should be easy to get although adding someone like Boldin would be amazing. At Guard, Wharton was Gruden's guy in Cincy so he's a good possibility. I'd like Rinehart back as we should never have let him go and would not have if Shanahan wasn't set on the "small, fast" zone run scheme guys. I like Verner at CB to replace Wilson. Keep Hall and Amerson. Byrd at S would be amazing but he wants top money, maybe too much. We need someone who can return kicks, maybe McCluster, who is versatile on offense and can line up at RB or WR and run the gimmick/trick plays that work when your WB is Robert Griffin III. I also like Jacoby Jones as a #2 WR and return man option. ORAKPO MUST BE RESIGNED. Rob Jackson also with Fletcher's departure. My targets: T - Veldheer, Albert, Gross or Oher C - Mack G - Wharton, Rinehart or Waters WR/KR - Jacoby Jones, Josh Cribbs, Brandon Tate, Tedd Ginn or Dexter McCluster WR (non returner) - James Jones, Golden Tate, Andre Roberts, Denario Alexander (could be steal if gets healthy), Jacoby Ford, Mario Mannigham, Riley Cooper CB - Verner, Shields, Munnerlyn (who has return experience) S -Byrd, TJ Ward or Malcolm Jenkins as cheaper option DT - Paul Soliai, Corey Peters, Alex Carrington DE - Lamarr Houston, Robert Ayers, Michael Bennett edit: Forgot punter. Get Zoltan. |

Let it go. He was drunk and said something stupid.
It's only a big deal because of he media. He put it behind him, the team did, and he had a great year for one of our biggest rivals. I'd love to get him away from Chip Kelly. He's better than any of our WRs aside from Garcon. |

This I can't quite comprehend, Why would a 3-10 team just be looking for depth? We have some depth. It's quality starters that we don't have at many positions. We have no safeties. We have no Offensive RT. We have no #2 Receiver. We need upgrades at OG and C. We need at least one starter at ILB. We need a shut down CB. We need a PR/KR. |

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Punter and d tackle will be the biggest need if we go 4-3
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I'd love to talk FA but I have no idea which of these guys might be available or how much each of them might cost. Can somebody give me some idea of how much we'll have to spend and what we might be able to get for that amount (e.g., a starting safety ($x), a starting OT ($x), etc.)? Thanks!

Thanks. I forgot Punter. Scary, ain't it? |

Redskins have to draft well and build a foundation of starters than they can go and use free agency to find a starter or two. |

I don't see any reason why the process needs to be linear, starting with the draft. We could certainly find a young starter in FA, then draft to fill another position, or vice versa. I think it can work both ways. The key is to not pay big dollars for older FA's. Pierre Garcon is an example of a good FA signing. The Skins signed him while he was still on the way up and they should get the full benefit of his contract. |

LOL. From the FA list, I want us to pursue Brent Grimes, Jairus Byrd, Jon Asamoah, and Ted Ginn Jr. Obviously punter is a need to, so maybe the best punter available. |

Tampa Bay, Miami, and Buffalo all tried to use free agency for the immediate fix. It did not work. The only position that you can have immediate improvement through free agency is QB. Is Manning or Brees out there? If not there is no need to sign a player to a 6 year 70 million dollar deal because you want to build your team like Madden, instead of building an NFL team. |

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
WR and TEs list is loaded. the problem is a lot of these guys will be resigned with their current teams before hitting the market. some nice OTs too. that might be the most important upgrade to get this offseason. i'd like a OG too, but that crop looks terrible... maybe grab one in the draft.
kenny britt would be a nice low key WR add, he'd instantly be the #2 and should be good price/performance wise. as far as DBs, tillman/byrd sounds soo nice right now. it does suck that 3 of our 4 top LBs are FAs :/ i think we should try to keep them. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Hakeem Nicks please.

He can be anything he wants as long as he helps us get to the playoffs.
We're trying to win football games. Not a nicey nice contest. |

ST is probably the best example we've had recently... i'm sure if he swapped teams you'd see a big difference. I do get what you're saying and generally agree though. unless you're getting a top 3 player, one FA move in and of itself isn't going to change much or guarantee wins. |

I got into it with a guy in another thread because he was the complete opposite of you; wanted to get rid of EVERYONE, then start signing people like crazy. If anything it should be 50/50, 5-6 drafted players providing depth and maybe 1-2 starters out of that, then 5-6 free agent signings. |

The only elite position that can drastically change a team is a QB. You have to have other pieces around that player. Look at Adrian Peterson's current team for an example. Or Calvin Johnson's Team. Or JJ Watt's team. Those are elite players at their positions. But the team failed to build around them. That is why spending a lot of money on one player that you are not sure about how they will transfer to your team, rarely works. |

I have a problem with creating your team by signing big names. Seattle turned around their team in a few years drafting extremely well, using trades, and signing a few guys to team friendly deals. Cowboys built their team the same way in the 90's under Jimmy Johnson. Look at Johnson's draft history and it is obvious why that team turned around from being 1-15. You can use free agency, but especially with how draft money is structured now, the best way to build your team is through the draft. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
The Redskins already have a core of young talented players acquired through the draft: RG3, Morris, Reed (if healthy), Rak, Kerrigan, Riley, T. Williams, and Amerson.
After two years of cap penalties, we can't go all cheap in free agency. Good teams develop their team through both the draft and free agency. Vinny Cerrato is not running the team anymore, so it is a bit ridiculous to think that our FA strategy is going to be like Vinny's. That said, without a first round pick in the draft, we can't expect to field a team with just our draft picks from this year. The team will need to be smart about free agent acquisition and get a couple of starters from this free agency pool. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Here would be the difference between Vinny's big spending and Bruce Allen's big spending that's hopefully coming up...Vinny did not know talent and did not consider fitting into schemes and team chemistry. Bruce does.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
If we cannot get Ward or Byrd at safety I really think we should go after Stevie Brown as a cheaper option. He was the Giants biggest ball hawk last year and they really missed him this past season.

That is a couple of players that were drafted by the Skins. A core is what the Patriots have. Obviously Brady is a huge reason for their success but you have a locker room filled with guys that were developed with the Patriot system. The Patriots use free agency for depth (a lot of them are starting now because of injury) and to give guys chances that come there cheap. Just looking at their team you have Soldier, Mankins, Wendell, Vollmer, Edelman, Gronk, Ridley, Brady, Wilfork, Spikes, Mayo, Hightower, Jones, McCourty and Dennard. All those players were either drafted by the Pats or came as an undrafted free agent. That is a core. That is what the locker room is lacking. Solid players that were developed together and with only one team. The Seahawks were able to build that in a few years as well. 49ers had that they just needed a coach. Packers pretty much only build through the draft. You don't need to sign a lot of free agents to be starters in order to be competitive. What has worked for a lot of successful teams is drafting and developing players in your system, building a core and solid locker room, and then you can bring in a free agent or two in order to fill a hole and create depth. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I want us to draft a PR/KR in Dri Archer. I also would like us to draft a Number 2 WR like Kelvin Benjamin
I want us to rebuild our line through free agency because I want a player that has proven he can block in this league. Michael Oher has played both RT and LT and has never missed a game for injury. We need to make it a priority to steal him. |
