Re: cornerback pposition
Of the candidates:
Walt Harris - has starting experience with the Bears, and was overqualified as a mickel back last year. Not as dynamic as Smoot, but no slouch. Also relatively inexpensive. Darnell Wilds - Undrafted rookie free agent with promise, but no guarantee he can handle the full-time nickel role, much less starting CB. Ade Jimoh - In a recent poll of DC-area school age children, was voted the most popular #23 in sports, beating Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and others. Still no threat to start, but a fun tidbit. Antrell Rolle (no relation to Samari) - Gibbs typically doesn't start rookies, and the draft hasn't happened yet. If the team drafts him, expect him to start the season on the bench, and work his way off. Also, look for late cuts on the free agent market (I can't figure out why Andre Dyson isn't getting some action out there). |
Re: cornerback pposition
It's Garnell Wilds and Antrel Rolle is not related to Samari. I think Harris will start and we'll promote someone within to be the nickel, most likely Wilds.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
If we draft I'd rather have Pac-man! Little smaller, but much faster, willing to sacrifice his body. Like Smoot only faster and more athletic!
I still think Harris and June 1st cut guys could fill the role. |
Re: cornerback pposition
Most definitely. I also read somewhere that they might try Andre Lott at CB.

Hope they don't make that same mistake on his bust in Canton I just bought a new pair of Air Jimohs I can't understand why Dyson is getting no action either....I think the team likes Rufus Brown as well, right |
Re: cornerback pposition
With a name like Brud, I'm usually pretty sensitive about spellings. To Garnell and the Wilds family, my heartfelt apologies.

Re: cornerback pposition
I really do think we have depth at CB. We just need to let Williams analyze in the offseason. He helped make bold decisions to not overpay Smoot and Pierce so I'm sure he has a great master plan.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
I think the starters will be Springs/Harris and Wilds as Nickel. Wilds may even jump Harris at some point.

Re: cornerback pposition
I GOT A PAIR OF AIR CHRISTIAN SLATTERS! Slatter maxes! Rocking the newest in Ben Stiller wear!
Good ol' WutAng! I'd love to see Jimoh be our starter. We'd get burned. But every time he made a play I'd feel like I just entered heaven! |
Re: cornerback pposition
The Ade Jimoh Fan Club would increase exponentially with every play. The "Ade" knows what it means to be a superstar.

Re: cornerback pposition
In todays Virginia Pilot sports section they were talking about Gibbs two press conf.. They said he was going to give Williams a Try. He said they played him alittle reserved last year do to his knee. The editore also commented that it will be late into traning camp before they will know if his knee will hold up. I don't know where he came up with that.

That's what I said.

Re: cornerback pposition
Harris was brought along very slowly last year coming off his injury which was a very wise move on part of the Skins.
I really think they brought him in last year with an eye on this year knowing losing Smoot was a strong possibility. I believe he can be a quality starter for us for the next 1-2 seasons, but it will definitely be smart to have someone behind him ready to go. |
Re: cornerback pposition
We're gonna draft a CB. Whether Harris and Wilds are a lock at the 2nd and nickel spots, we still need to look to the future barring our free agent spending sprees of yesteryear. :oink:

Anyone think we can pick up a halfway decent CB without wasting our #1 pick?

Harris is a solid #2. Frankly, his "unspectacular" game may be better suited to the position than a gambling style with the focus on contact. |
Re: cornerback pposition
I completely agree about Harris. I feel that he will fill the void nicely as the departure of Smoot. What I am worried about is what another poster said about what do we do in 1-2 years? I was just wondering if there was a good CB we could take in later rounds to groom for later years.
Or maybe this is just one of those bridges that we cross when we get to it? |
Re: cornerback pposition
Walt Will Be Fine This Year But The Ting To Consider Is The Fact That Both Of Our Starting Cb's Will Be 30 Or Over And Then It Drops Off From There.i Really Thingk We Need To Take The Pack Man To Come Up And Play Nickel Learn The Pros Maybe Even Start But You Can't Wait Til You Need A Cb You've Got To Have Them Or You Are Going To Pay Out The Butt For Them Later. To Play The Defense Williams Wants You Need Good Cover Cb's
|
Re: cornerback pposition
That's a definite. I'm just wondering if we select a CB now and pass on a great WR or take a WR now and select a CB in the later rounds or develop from within.

I could only hope that one day "The Ade" will frequent this site and get that special feeling that a young child gets when a butterfly lands on his head.

Re: cornerback pposition
I'm not sure how the unknown "Williams" fit into that article, but Roosevelt Williams is a CB for the Redskins. He is a former third round draft pick and actually started five games for the Bears I believe. In time, he could prove to be a more than capable dime CB at the least. Also, we have former UDFA Rufus Brown on the roster, and he is another speedster. I don't know if those guys have what it takes, however, so I think we should be thinking CB in the 3rd round, where we could be looking at a number of pretty decent CBs. Darrent Williams (Ok State), Antonio Perkins (Oklahoma), Domonique Foxworth (MD boy), Stanley Wilson (Stanford), Ronald Bartell, Jr. (Howard), and Eric Green (Va Tech) all grade out as 3rd round material, and assuredly several of them will be available at our pick. This draft is extremely deep for CBs; we could definitely find a diamond in the rough of the 3rd round. Most of the great CBs in the league were not first round guys, so hopefully we can continue that trend.

Re: cornerback pposition
gibbs said in his press conference that they'd try walt, wilds and lott at CB, since lott played cb in college and we got 4 SS's that can play fine.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
I personally think we're going to draft a corner.
Gibbs said the positions that are "up for review" are MLB and CB. Redskins.com reported and Gibbs said it appears our WR corps is set. Third, it appears that Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards will be gone by the time we pick. It's possible that we could draft Troy Williamson, but I doubt it. Gibbs et al met with Troy Williamson before the combine (something they did with Cooley last season). Troy also has amazing speed and has watched his stock rise from the bottom to the top of the first round (likely top 10 pick). But, I think with Walt Harris' advanced age, a lack of proven depth at CB, and lots of depth at CB in the draft, I definately think we'll end up drafting either Pac-Man Jones or Rolle. |
Re: cornerback pposition
I also think that picking a WR with the #9 pick isn't going to happen. I think that we would be better trading our number 9 pick for a late 1st round and 2nd round pick. Then, we could get a solid DE and CB to add to the mix. I have a feeling that Gibbs thinks he has found the receivers that he needs to get open in his system.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
Just like I said before, I am completely satisfied with our receivers now. It IS looking a bit unrealistic that we would get Williams, but there are plenty of other playmakers left in the draft at other positions that we can address with our #1.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
We can handle the CB situation from within. Draft Marcus Spears-DE-LSU. We could use a DE that can get after the QB.
|
Re: cornerback pposition
Like I said before, we DO have Daniels waiting for next year... The reason we got him is because he CAN get to the QB. I'm not advocating getting a defensive player at all, I just feel that Williams will be gone.
