Kevin Carter?
Word out of Tennessee is that D. Mason, S. Rolle, and K. Carter just to name a few are going to be cut. Kevin Carter has been playing for awhile and is as good as it gets on the line. Would anyone be willing to take in Carter? I am sure he has a pretty big cap number so I don't know. What's everyones thoughts on K. Carter.

Re: Kevin Carter?
No on Carter but if Mason hits the market the Skins would be crazy to not give him a look.
96 catches this year, 95 the year before, a very underrated WR who could probably be signed for less $$ than Burress or Muhammad. |
Re: Kevin Carter?
Yeah Matty, Mason would be a very nice player to bring in. L. Coles and D. Mason kinda has a ring to it.

Re: Kevin Carter?
Here's what Scouts Inc has to say about these guys:
Mason lacks ideal size as a red zone threat. He also is not a big threat on jump balls on fade routes. He also will struggle at times versus bigger DC's that get a shove in on him at the LOS. However, with all of that said, Mason is still a solid No. 1 WR who provides extra versatility because of his ability in the return game if needed. He is a quicker than fast WR with terrific suddenness. Displays excellent burst of the LOS and shows the ability to drive the corner back. Shows premiere change of direction skills and he is capable of making defenders miss in the open field. Does a good job of creating separation from the defender and burst is excellent in and out of cuts. Does a good job of getting upfield quickly and he shows the ability to turn the small gain into a big play. Overall, Mason lacks prototypical No. 1 WR size and he has had some trouble staying healthy at times. Mason may not fit the mold, but he is still one of the more consistent receivers in the NFL and we think he's one of the most underrated players at his position.

Carter is a versatile player with great size at DE and great quickness at DT. No matter which position he is playing, Carter is at his best on the move. He is quick, fluid and athletic for his size. He has very good instincts and diagnostic skills. He will do a good job of avoiding contact, locating the ball and pursuing. He makes a lot of plays on the move and in space. He has very good COD skills for his size and is an above average open-field tackler. However, Carter is starting to age and is likely to lose a step or two in the next couple of seasons. He has great size as a DE but he does not play as big as his size would indicate. He lacks great strength. He has some trouble when teams run at him and when bigger OL get locked on to him. His work ethic and toughness are just decent. Carter should remain a solid and versatile starter for the Titans in '04, but his play is likely to decline from here on out.

Rolle is undersized and gets pushed around too much by bigger receivers. He is not very physical in the passing game or the running game. He has adequate height, but lacks bulk and strength. Is a finesse DC that does not like to press receivers. He is a below average tackler who does not fill hard vs. the run. He also has had lots of trouble staying healthy for a complete season. However, when Rolle is healthy he is one of the more athletic cover corners in the NFL. Is versatile enough to play outside or inside against the slot receiver, but spends most of his time on the outside. He is quicker than fast, but rarely gets beat one-on-one down the sideline because he has excellent technique and recognition skills, and he has very smooth hips. He is at his best in the short-to-intermediate zone when he can take chances and jump underneath routes. Possesses rare recognition skills and he plays with great technique. Overall, Rolle is one of the better pure cover corners in the NFL.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
Mason would be a nasty pick up and Rolle would fill in nicely if Fred leaves but I don;t like Carter with us. I could see him being another guy past his prime getting too much money. I would rather see us draft a DE or go after Hayward from the Broncos.

Re: Kevin Carter?
Would you want a guy that hits his wife on Valentines Day? Please no Rolle.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
All these guys are past thier prime. Forget them, retain Smoot.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
Mason would be a GREAT guy to have. I think he'll be real expensive though, probably take a 8-10 Million bonus. I say no on Carter, Salavae'a and Griffin did great this past year, we don't need Carter. I'm iffy on Rolle. I think Walt Harris is underrated and can get the job done if Smoot jets.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
I am not sure what Mason would want but given that he is part of a pretty big WR free agent pool, he may not cost that much. If we could get him for a decent price ok, but remember that he is around 30 years old, so his window for playing in the nfl is almost closed.
As for Rolle, I am pretty sure that he will want as much as if not more than Smoot, so I say just try to keep Smoot. Carter is too old get some new blood!! |
Re: Kevin Carter?
It's going to be a tough offseason for the Titans. In addition to all the names mentioned already they've got a couple of key free agents to worry about, Justin Hartwig and Andre Dyson.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
How good is Dyson? Would he be an upgrade to Smoot?
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
I think Dyson is a great young cornerback but he would cost as much as, if not more than, Smoot so I would say no, he's not an upgrade...It would almost be a lateral move

hells yeah |
Re: Kevin Carter?
yeah...

Re: Kevin Carter?
only thing about mason is hes in his thirties, but give him a 3 year deal for not too much and id be all for it
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
Here's a novel idea... Let's get a YOUNG #1 WR who we can build around. Not some guy who has 2 good years left in him.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
Mason is 30, he still has plenty left in the tank.
I'd still like to see us take one of the top WR prospects in the draft and also give Jacobs more playing time, but with Coles and Gardner on the way out I would think we'd have to give a veteran WR a look too. |

Re: Kevin Carter?
I dotn see us going after Mason. Or Rolle. Gibbs likes vets but i think he will bring in youth. We dotn have the cap room to give these old guys 7 year deals knowing we will cut them, like we did brunell. Well, I guess we do since that way we just give them a big bonus and spread it out...but I say go young, and in the draft.

Re: Kevin Carter?
I feel we need at least one veteran starting receiver. Someone clutch that we can go to.
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
You don't think Thrash is clutch?
|
Re: Kevin Carter?
I don't know if Thrash has proven himself to be clutch but I'll vouch that this year he has definitely been there when a clutch catch was needed.

Clutch maybe, a go to guy though? Probably not. |
Re: Kevin Carter?
Yup, my thinking exactly.

Re: Kevin Carter?
The axe has officially dropped:
Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Receiver Derrick Mason and cornerback Samari Rolle were among six players released Monday by the Tennessee Titans in an effort to cut up to $27 million to get under the NFL salary cap. In addition to Mason and Rolle, the Titans released starting defensive lineman Kevin Carter and right tackle Fred Miller. They also cut fullback Robert Holcombe and kicker Joe Nedney. Titans owner Bud Adams said everyone on the team knew this day was coming. "At this point, I believe this is the best option for our franchise and know it will make us stronger for the future," Adams said in a statement. "To our fans, this is not an ending. I believe in this team and I look forward to seeing them grow." General manager Floyd Reese said the Titans want to mimic Baltimore's approach to the salary cap - slash large salaries in one lump and, hopefully, limit any damage to one season. "We're done manipulating. Now we're going to fix this," Reese said. Mason led all NFL receivers last season with a career-high 96 catches for 1,168 yards and seven touchdowns. The eight-year veteran was the first player in franchise history to have four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. Mason said he was anxious to test free agency. "I've got a good four, five more years in me. I want to go to a team that's going to compete for a championship next year," Mason told radio station WWTN-FM. Rolle, considered among the league's top cover cornerbacks, was arrested last week on a domestic assault charge. A Pro Bowl selection in 2000, Rolle played in 12 games last season before having surgery on his left knee. He had only one interception and 28 tackles. Carter was the veteran on a very young defensive line last season. He played both end and tackle while mentoring the Titans' five draft picks. Miller is a nine-year veteran who started at right tackle the last five seasons for Tennessee. Holcombe's roster spot has been in jeopardy since the Titans drafted Troy Fleming last April. Fleming had better numbers rushing and catching. Nedney has missed all but one half of the past two seasons with a torn ACL, then a torn hamstring. The Titans are the league's fourth-winningest team since 1999 at 61-35. "There's a chance we could get some of these guys back," coach Jeff Fisher told WWTN-FM. "This is a salary cap decision we have to make and to the common person, it doesn't make any sense at all. I think it illustrates how sophisticated the process is." Reese said the cuts will clear 80 percent of the $27 million that the team is over the cap. The Titans are reworking a few other contracts, and Reese said Monday's moves will allow the team to tender offers to their 10 restricted free agents and all their exclusive rights free agents. Tennessee has the sixth pick overall in the upcoming the draft, their highest since selecting Steve McNair third overall in 1995. |
Re: Kevin Carter?
Should we consider moving up to the #6 spot to improve our chances of getting someone like Williams?
A WR and the #9, would that work? |
Re: Kevin Carter?
Mason wants to go where he'll compete for a championship. Come to Washington - we win the spring! Don't worry about our track record - every year we're supposed to win the division!
