Good for those that need healthcare but can't afford it.

Re: Supreme Court Upholds Health Care Mandate

Personally I like the plan, especially kids in college being able to stay on their parents plan. When I was in college I saw the price of medical insurance, on my own, as a healthy 20something was just crazy. I decided to gamble -- and lost. It's when I really started to hate the medical system in the states. I realize I gambled and lost. I paid about 25K for 45 minutes in a hospital and 700 a week for 16 weeks for antibiotics to try to attack the lyme disease. I made a mistake, and understood I had to pay this money, but what made me upset -- is that insurance companies would have paid significantly less for the exact same system. A self-pay patient shouldn't have any different rate than an insurance company.

Secondly, the mandate for insurance is important. How can you mandate auto insurance, and in some cases home insurance, but not require medical. If this was overturned couldn't legal precedent be set to make those insurances optional as well? I'm actually curious if there's any reason why auto is required whereas health insurance wasn't.

Egg all over CNN's face. How could it let that happen?

Anyhow, this ruling is a great day for America, although what we really need is a true universal health care system. This will do for now.

Lotus, I'd also like to see a true Universal Health Care system, just not sure how you support the additional load created by illegal immigrants as we do in CA.

Would removing the Insurance companies from the equation help to create a more egalitarian system?

The federal goverment cannot even run the national flood Ins Program and you guiys think they can run your health care. The sad part is that this is going to be a very expensive "I Told You So" a few years from now.

The best part is that this plan is about the same plan as Massachusetts.

Massachusetts has the most expensive family health insurance premiums in the country, according to a new analysis that highlights the state’s challenge in trying to rein in medical costs after passage of a landmark 2006 law that mandated coverage for nearly everyone.

Great idea on in gov. Take a failing plan in one state and make it the national plan. Bravo!!!

I expected the the conservative court to strike down the individual mandate but I guess Robert was in legacy protection mode. It wasn't all good news though, the chief justice parsed the law such that the feds can't tell states "take xxxx action or else we won't give you monies."

Regardless, I can't wait to hear Romney dance his way around the issue. You guys sent the only guy who can least talk about Obamacare with a knife to a gun fight.

This plan has been tried by Mass. and they pay the highest premium IN THE COUNTRY for health ins. This is not new its just a bad plan.

Let's delve further into your claim about the health insurance and see what we can find. Oooo...lookie here. I want you to read the whole article so that why you won't be propagating misleading info.

Does Massachusetts Have the Nation’s Highest Health Insurance Premiums? It Depends. - Health Stew - Boston.com
Some things help to explain the difference. Massachusetts health insurance tends to include lower deductibles and other kinds of cost sharing which are much higher in most other states, a difference that inflates MA premiums as compared with those in other states. Massachusetts has the highest proportion of physicians, nurses and many other health professional categories than all other states. And our costs have always been the highest, not just since the Massachusetts health reform law passed in 2006. But still, guilty as charged.

There are other key differences, and the most important one is income. Massachusetts had the 4th highest median household income among the 50 states in 2010 (after Maryland, New Jersey, and Connecticut). That accounts for a big part of the difference. The raw (unadjusted) premiums shown above don't take into account ability to pay. For example, assume Ms. M lives in Massachusetts and has $100 in income and health insurance premiums costing $20. Then assume Mr. A lives in Arkansas, has income of $50, and health insurance premiums costing $15. Even though Mr. A pays less, he is paying 30% of his income and Ms. M is paying 20% of hers. Who is worse off? I think Mr. A from Arkansas.
Yes, I think that removing the insurance companies from the equation might makes things both more egalitarian and cheaper, since insurance companies are complicit in driving up costs.

Universal health care works in other countries, so it should work here, too. Don't you think so?

I experienced the English system first-hand, before it took a dump due to freeloading from immigrants. It's workable but only if everyone is paying in and we're not doing tummy tucks for $10 for fat bastards that refuse to work out or eat sensibly.

Then we have the quandry of who chooses which procedure for whom.

Potentially, it could work. Actually? I doubt it.

well, if you paid for 100% of preventitive care and nothing for those that failed to get free preventitive care...

like say you got your yearly cancer screening, you're more likely to catch it early and potentially save a million in costs by not waiting till late stage onset. or do some kind of cost share to prevent people from taking $5mill surgery when 50k surgery would be 95% as effective.

it is a bit surprising just based on how loudly people said it'd fail at court, but I guess it's for real now. at least until someone tries another appeal.

You missed my point.

We already have socialist entities in our midst: Medicare, law enforcement, fire protection, public schools, post office, etc. Most people seem to like these things, too.

In comparison, the Affordable Care Act is really not very socialist. It does not pool tax money to provide a public service like these other entities do. There is an expansion of Medicare, sure, but it's not like the ACA invented Medicare.

So arguing against the ACA because it is "socialist" actually is a non-argument, regardless of the popularity of this argument. The ACA is actually less socialist than many things that are already in our midst and that most people accept.

The ACA became law through legislative vote and approval by the Supreme Court. These are democratic processes. The ACA was adopted by democratic process, end of story.

We know it was a democratic process because the individual mandate was not part of Obama's original plan.
