Brady The Best?

I know we had this thread before the SB but after it I have to say I will put this kid ahead of Montana, he's going to go down as the best of all time, he just understand's how to play QB and read a defense, he is everything Montana was mentaly, throw's the deep ball better, and at 27 has equaled Montana's SB titles, if I can have 1 QB for 1 game he's my guy.

Shane 02-07-2005 05:35 AM

Tom Brady can read defenses well and he is a cool customer. The latter trait really is important and it lets him be an exceptional team leader. Other traits he has in terms of physical skills are solid but not extraordinary. Brady really brings the mental aspect of the game to a level probably as good as we have seen.

Montana to me had superior physical skills. He was a very accurate passer. You really felt that when the game was on the line, Montana had a magic that no one else had. Montana also was a very cool customer and excellent leader.

Brady has a lot of the things Montana had, but I don't feel like teams are scared to death of Tom Brady by himself. Teams were scared to death of Joe Montana.

Joe Montana won four Super Bowls by the way, so Brady is still one short in that area.

To me Joe Montana was a great legend, while Tom Brady is the consummate team quarterback on a dynasty team with excellent leadership skills. I don't think of Brady as having the kind of package by himself that Montana had.

3 rings in 4 years and he's only played 5 years in the league. For that alone he's in a category all by himself.

FRPLG 02-07-2005 09:14 AM

I love how Brady plays and I think he is a great QB. I don't begrudge him one thing. McNabb, on the other hand, I think showed last night that he is not the QB that everyone thinks he is. Until this season I had always maintained he was vastly over-rated. But this year he even convinced me he had taken the next step and actually was as good as his press. Last night all his problems that I had harped on in seasons passed shown through. I think Reid deserves a lot of blame for the Gibbs-like clock management at the end of the game but honestly McNabb was the guy huddling for 10 seconds after every play and taking another 15 to get the ball snapped only to throw a 5 yard in or slant. McNabb has some great qualities for a QB. He seems intelligent and can understand the game well. Of course his quickness and agility are advantages but his basic qb skills are just average at best. He has an average arm and below average accuracy and seems to get flustered a little more than a great QB should. His biggest problem seems to be his ego. I don't think he is some egostitical jerk(on the contrary...i think he is a genuine guy who does all the right things of the field) but he seems so intent on being recoginzed as a good pocket passer when the best and most useful part of his game is his ability to move and create time for his receivers and match up problems for defenses. He is a good QB who can do a few great things but he is not a great QB.

He deserves a lot of credit, but its a team game. He is surrounded by a great team and organization. I'm not seeing that he is the dominant reason for the Patriots success. Maybe my eyes are failing me, I don't know.

The same can be said of Montana, he had an incredible cast around him and one of the best coaches in the history of the game in Walsh. Back then the 49ers were the model NFL franchise as well.

EEich 02-07-2005 09:44 AM

It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he signs. I hope he's smart enough not to push for a huge Payton Manning contract. He could win three more in New England if he keeps it reasonable and allows the FO to keep talent around him on both sides of the ball. Payton's contract has pretty much guaranteed that he will never win the big one.

saden1 02-07-2005 10:55 AM

He is a HFer. The guys stands there and takes hits when he needs to. What I like about him the most though is his footwork. He really knows how to step into and out of the pocket just so he can complete the pass.

Don't be so sure. When they lose those two coordinators I think people calling Bellichek the best coach since Lombardi, etc will quickly stop.

It will be interesting to see how the offense is without Weiss' playcalling next year. But it looks like they're going to keep things in house so it should be a similar philosophy.

speaking of Lombardi...36 years ago today he was named Coach and VP of the Redskins

MTK 02-07-2005 01:28 PM

It should be interesting to see how Belichick rebuilds his staff. I can't see them falling too far off though, they still have a great core of players that should keep them in the playoff hunt for the next few years.

dirtbag2112 02-07-2005 01:51 PM

It's a stretch right now to put Tom Brady down as the "best of all time". It's obvious now in today's NFL that it takes team continuity on both sides of the ball including special teams. You can no longer say that a quarterback is the catalyst for winning games in the playoffs. Look at Peyton Manning... A season of spectacular play and record breaking numbers, but nothing other than MVP honors to show for it. Put Manning, Culpeper or Pennington in the Pats line up and you might even see better results. New Englands defense and ability to cause turnovers and make plays is still the primary reason for their "dynasty".

In 1981, they had kind of makeshift team, and basically didn't even have a running back with much ability. Their later teams were stocked with talent, that is true. Jerry Rice came on board for their last two Super Bowls with Montana. You're right that the 49ers had a first rate franchise and great coach also. It's a subjective judgment that Montana to me was definitely more of a difference maker for his teams. I'm not knocking Brady, but if we are in a discussion about who is the better quarterback, its Joe Montana in my book.

Brady's first SB victory was with a make shift team against a team they where 15 point underdog's against, and yes Brady has won 2 super bowl's without a RB, and we have to take into account Brady took over for an apparent franchise QB in his prime in Bledsoe who was going no where with that team, the 9er's have proven time and again that their system under Walsh can produce pro bowl QB's at a record pace of which they do nothing once they leave that system, Grbac, Garcia, even Steve Young was a lowsey QB before he arrived at San Fran, and even then surrounded by great player's it took him a long time before he really became a good QB in that system, and IMO Young is maybe the most overated QB I have seen he was by far, out of all of the great QB's the biggest product of a system I can remember seeing. I was alway's a big Montana fan but I think this kid will pass him buy, if people don't want to give him that title yet I can respect that but I do think it's only a matter of time.

sportscurmudgeon 02-07-2005 05:16 PM

If Tom Brady gets run over by a bus today, he would be in the HoF five years from now on the first ballot. NO doubt in my mind!

FRPLG:

You said that Donovan McNabb was a "good QB" who could do "some great things" but you thought he was still over-rated. Question for you:

How would you compare Donovan McNabb to Patrick Ramsey?

BrudLee 02-07-2005 05:38 PM

Here's the thing about the Brady/Montana comparisons. Montana played with Hall of Fame skill players on his offense. Rice is a lock. Brent Jones will get some votes, as will Roger Craig. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if John Taylor gets "Stallworthed" in after Rice makes Hall.

Now, does anyone think a single Patriot from this year's team is a lock for the Hall, besides Brady? Maybe Vinateri, and others (on the defense) will get consideration. There certainly aren't any wideouts that are Canton-bound, and I don't see Dillon pre-ordering a bronze bust of himself.

It's early, but the Brady-backers aren't completely crazy.

jbcjr14 02-07-2005 05:42 PM

Brady is a great QB and is still VERY young. Thing it is too early to compare with Montana, but before its all said and done he could be the greatest to ever play.

Defensewins 02-07-2005 07:53 PM

IMO what makes Tom Brady so great is the same thing that makes the Patriots great, they play smart football. They are extremely well coached and they play smart ball.
I don't care about stats...Tom Brady is the best QB in the NFL, period. Peyton Manning might have much bigger stats but he also has bigger/better weapons on offense and plays in a less balanced offense (they throw more). Look who held the TD pass record before Peyton, Dan Marino. How many Super Bowls did he win? ZERO! Screw stats!
Plus I don't think Peyton has proved in college or NFL that he can win the big game. He chokes! He threw something like 4 INT's in last years AFC championship game and scored only 3 points in this years final game. Brady does not throw many INT's. He will throw the short pass or even throw the ball away. Until the other young guns like Peyton Manning and McNabb learn this and play smarter they will continue to come up short.
Tom Brady better get the MVP trophy next year.

I think what Tom Brady's problem is that he is quietly efficient......I think one poster said he's smart and that's correct too, he does his homework. And when he's on the field he does his job so quietly and effectively that you don't really realize it until you look at his stats..........he's like Tim Duncan of NBA....Mr. Fundamental.................

Hmmm...that description kinda reminds me of a former Redskin WR that should be in the HoF.
