I would cut Hall, Brown and Sellers of the bat.

Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
agreed or cut brown & sellers and restructure hall if we can't get a better replacement

I agree with Brown and Sellers, but what to do with Hall is a tough question. I would be in favor of cutting him but who do you bring in? We already need to draft 1 CB to play nickle at the very least, cant draft 2 and have limited depth already. Do you give a big contract to Grimes? maybe, but I dont think ATL is letting him go. I wouldnt consider any other FA on long term deals. You have to remember the Laron situation as well, I think you deal with that before you deal with Hall. I certainly wouldnt go expensive, long term with Laron, but he has a very high ceiling compared to the other FA at this point. The draft is limited at safety this year, but you could find a mid round value. |

There are about nine guys on that list at the top (eight minus Rogers) who would be intriguing options opposite Josh Wilson, and about half this list would be a nice upgrade over what Hall offers. For six million dollars of used cap space, that is: The league against DeAngelo Hall, QB passer rating (on passes where Hall is targeted): 2010 - 105.8 2011 - 100.4 |
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
Ray Ray Armstrong as Safety in the 3rd/4th.
|
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
i'd love grimes... marshall or rogers would be good too, or drafting claiborne. If it looks like none of those are happening (and marshall is really a value signing more than a true #1), then hall is probably back.

Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
How bout Ladarius Webb from the Ravens???
|
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
Sorry, I'm a little dumb with this cap space stuff. So how much will we have going into free agency in March?
|
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
Terrell Thomas is probably the best CB from the list, big physical and good cover, unfortunately he gets hurt quite a bit.
|
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
If we don't draft Claiborne then I'd go for Webb or Grimes and am starting to come around to the Dwayne Bowe playing for us theory. Him or Vincent Jackson.
Sorry, I'm a little dumb with this cap space stuff. So how much will we have going into free agency in March?
$38 million is what the Redskins have right now, but that's a bit misleading because of all their free agents.
They have about $15 or $16 million with which to improve the team and about an additional $30 million in salary flexibility with players on their own roster. |

"According to The Warpath.net the Redskins have a projected cap commitment next year of $82.75 million. Now even the Warpath.net will admit that their numbers aren’t official, but they do an excellent job of finding the information out from news reports and various other sources, and next to having access to the league’s official cap numbers it is about as good as you are going to get. Now I cross checked their numbers with other sources such as Rotoworld (which doesn’t always give the cap numbers and you need to guesstimate a lot) and Sportrac, and the Warpath numbers looked to be on in just about every case. So while they could be slightly off their numbers seem to be close enough to the mark to evaluate." :embarrass |

According to Tandler we might have up to $11.9M to carry over to next year: Rich Tandler's Real Redskins: Salary cap "The new CBA allows teams to carry over unused cap money from one season to the next. According to our sister site Pro Football Talk, the Redskins had $11.9 million in cap space as of Nov. 20. They have eaten into a little of that with some injury replacements and some other roster moves but they still have almost all of it. So if the 2012 salary cap is $125 million as it is projected to be now, the Redskins will have almost $137 million to spend in 2012." According to my records we had very little if any cap room at the end of 2011. We might get a small credit but I'd be very surprised if it was anywhere near $11.9M. |

I have been going with a slightly educated assumption that the carryover would be about 4 mil. But I have no reason to have any confidence in a number like that. |

What actual figures are you referring to? The cap numbers on this site are estimates based on information from different sources. It's normal to be off by a mill or two, but a $12M discrepency seems large. Of course it's possible, but your educated assumption of $4M is probably closer to reality. |

LOL. OK, "actual figures" was a bad choice of words, since I have no access to those. I was referring to what this site shows, and I've seen a couple of other sites that do similar estimates. So I was referring to a kind of mash up of all those (with this site's being the best, imo). |
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
I recall when reconciling to other sites in the past that CC's numbers reconcile closely with numbers put out there by JI Halsell, the former Redskins salary cap analyst under Cerrato. There were other sites tracking salary cap information by player, PCinOZ for one did a particularly good job and also reconciled closely with Halsell. But CC's numbers here varied a tad from PCinOZ in that the Warpath figures tied more closely in the bonus allocations based on publicly available information. PCinOZ made more assumptions on those allocations, whereas CC typically found the articles - often put out by John Clayton - detailing bonus terms.
In short, if you see a large discrepancy between this site and another quoted figure, this site is usually closer to correct. Neither the NFL nor the Redskins as a franchise release their official salary cap status. This site is the best for it. Tandler is a solid journalist by all accounts, but journalists usually don't carry strong accounting or financial analysis skill sets. He's not going to be able to explain the variance, and I doubt his source can either. |

Actually I've been reconciling my sheets to PCinOz's over the last couple days. I've gone thru about 75% so far and we match up pretty well across the board. Will do another update in the coming days. |

How many years can signing bonuses be amortized for under the new CBA? I have never been able to find that info.

Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
How many years can signing bonuses be amortized for under the new CBA? I have never been able to find that info.
Under the old CBA you could amortize signing bonuses over the life of the contract, up to a max of 7 years. As the old CBA came closer to expiration, the max amort period was reduced from 7 yrs to 6 and then 5. I haven't seen anything in the new CBA that changes the old rules so I'm assuming the max amortization period is back to 7 years. |

I have heard people say that it is 5 years under the new CBA, but not from anyone that I would put all my faith in. Thanks Matty. I tweaked a bunch of the bonus info in this update. No major changes though. I have us at $36M of cap room. But I still hear the $13.4M credit number floating around. Seems high to me but the more I hear it the more likely it is I guess. If you add in the $13.4M credit it would bring our cap room to about $49M. |
