It's legit. Packers have been planning this for months

Thought about it but can't do it. Doesn't feel right to me...can't own a share of another football team. I have no problem with other skins fans buying a share, but it's not for me.

Ddon't worry, the Redskins fan police aren't going to show up and revoke your fan card.

re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
If you are a fan of football (and are willing to dish out the 250) I see no problem in doing this even if you are a fan of another team. The Packers are such a historic franchise, it would be really cool to do this.
|
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
I think its cool. Don't know the legalities of it, but if things were a little different with the team and the law did not get in the way, THE Dan would mop up doing something similar.......

Green Bay is ripping people off.
Its a scam to call these things "Common Stock". I dont know what they are but you cant sell them and i dont think you can ever redeem them. The only thing you get is a "vote", but who knows to what extent. Plus does anyone do anything but trash their proxies when they get them in the mail? The fact that you have to search the site to find out how much they cost makes this even worse. It costs $250, fyi. They set their site up so that some people will enter in all their information prior to even finding out how much these things cost is ridiculous. If you want to look cool by framing a stock you can use this service: Buy One Real Share of Stock. The cost is right in the FAQ, I didn't think it was hard to find.

Honestly after realizing the price of the "stock" was left off the main page did you look to find the price by first clicking on the Purchase button or looking through the FAQ? The whole thing is deceptive. If it was a fluxuating stock price i would get not have the price listed right on the main page. But for the main page to offer something for sale as complex as a supposed financial instrument and not show the price is deceiving to me. re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
Maybe it's because it's I've been following this story for months now but $250 stock with no voting rights has been pretty common knowledge. But maybe it was only to me.
Either way, I don't think there was any intent to deceive |
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
What a worthless racket of a stock. Sure you get a right to vote but so do millions of other shareholders and your voting rights are limited to what management wants you to vote on.

re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
The deception is that they call this sale a common stock sale.
|
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
I don't think people are buying a share with the intent of being a major player in the decision making of the team.

re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
Don't people understand this is more of a souvenir?

You forget the fantasy football mentality that some fans have and they actually believe they should have a 'say' for their $250. It's a fun gimmick to say you are part owner of a team. If you want to do it, do so. If not, keep it moving. Must everything devolve into a debate? |
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
Any investor with a modicum of knowledge about financial markets would be outraged at this, including me.
Stock is equity in a company entitling you to a share of the profits. Green Bay is calling this a Common Stock - which is a specific financial term - and then saying on the page that it doesn't entitle you to any profits. It's incredibly confusing, even if the Packers didn't intend to deceive. |

You can't refer to it as Common Stock then. |
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
And I'm sure there's a good many people reading this thread and rolling their eyes at the outrage over this, but I'd bet a lot of money that the SEC will have a problem with this.

re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
The stock offering document reads this:
THE COMMON STOCK HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED OR RECOMMENDED BY THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION OR ANY STATE OR INTERNATIONAL REGULATORY AUTHORITY NOR HAS THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION OR ANY STATE OR INTERNATIONAL REGULATORY AUTHORITY APPROVED THIS OFFERING OR THE TERMS OF THIS OFFERING. FURTHERMORE, THESE AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT CONFIRMED THE ACCURACY OR DETERMINED THE ADEQUACY OF THIS DOCUMENT. ANY REPRESENTATION TO THE CONTRARY IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE.
This is simply a fundraiser to raise money for stadium upgrades. It is NOT an investment in ownership of the team. |
re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
Jeez. I never suspected this would cause such a response. I thought it was pretty common knowledge that the Packers every several years or so sell "souvenir stock" for lack of a better word.

Why? They tell you that is non voting common stock....many companies have this .The price fluxuates and if it goes up ....you make a profit...as with other stocks, you just have no voting rights, what's the problem? P.S....also a question, does it pay a dividend .....most don't but some have. |

That is the better word and the term the Packers should use to sell this. |

Which is exactly why this "common stock" sale is not cool at all. Nobody's ever heard of that, so when you call it "common stock" it brings an entirely different preconceived notion. The very fact that SS titled this thread "Own the Packers" shows how badly misconstrued this "common stock" is. It is NOT ownership in the team and I humbly suggest that the Warpath change the thread title so as not to contribute to the confusion around this. The SEC has strict regulations around investments for a reason - it protects people from getting swindled. At best, you could call this very confusing, at worst it's a bait and switch. |

Re: Own a Piece of Paper Implying Stock That Has No True Value Yet Ceremoniously Says You Own a Piece of the Packers. Or Don't. What Do I Care.
It is merely a non tax deductible donation .
And yes it is misleading to call it "Stock" Further, in addition to the 250/share, there is a $25 extra fee .. From the prospectus: "Common Stock does not provide shareholders with any opportunity to participate in the economic performance of the Corporation because, among other things, no dividends or distributions upon liquidation can ever be paid to shareholders. Also, as described in “Description of Capital Stock—Transfer Restrictions; Redemption,” the Corporation’s Bylaws drastically limit the transferability of Common Stock, and the Corporation has a right of first refusal to repurchase Common Stock at a price of $0.025 per share if any shareholder proposes to transfer his or her Common Stock to a third party. As a result, it is virtually impossible for anyone to realize a profit on a purchase of Common Stock or even to recoup the amount initially paid to acquire such Common Stock." |
