Good move |
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
a necessary one too, they would have caught a lot of crap.
|
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
should be mandatory.
|
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
They're too smart to fine players for something like that. No way they would've done it, for this is one case where the consequences outweigh the benefits.

Why? It isn't a national holiday. It is observed, yeah, but it isn't a holiday like July 4th, etc. Besides, if you were to mourn, you should wear black. You should be remembering the people that were lost that day, not doing the rah, rah, rah USA USA stuff. That is what we did with Pearl Harbor, remembered those who lost their lives after the war was over. We didn't cheapen it to a national lovefest. |

I tend to agree with you Gus. It is a day of remembrance. It should not be anything other than that. It was a terrible day in our nations history. |

True. Maybe I'm just cynical, I hate that I already know that at least 30 min of the pregame shows are going to have some stupid piece on 9/11. It's not that I don't care, it's just that I don't like sports and politics to mix. In my opinion sports should be an escape from real life not a reminder of it. I was in the pentagon parking lot that day an I lost some friends in the world trade center. I'm going to remember for the rest of my life. I don't need my escape to be a constant reminder. |
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
America!
good to see the league loosening up a little and being human beings. |

I could put about 20 pages here, but I don't want to turn this into something else. I'll leave it at I don't want pregame shows to be about anything other than football. I don't want to hear about Katrina every time the saints play, the economy, or about anything else . I like sports to be sports. If players want to wear something patriotic I'm all for it, glad that aren't going to be fined. |
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
Kudos to the NFL for doing the right thing. Sometimes they can be total asshats about stuff like this, but they got it right this time.
should be mandatory.
No. |
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
Not sure who's on Twitter, but Adam Carriker just posted an awsome tweet about remembering 911, prayers for the families, and leaving it all on the field tomorrow for country and team. A few other Skins seemed really psyched too.

the league can mandate players wearing pink for breast cancer, but not for this? please....

Might as well mandate something for Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, War War II, Korean War, Iraq War I & II. Breast cancer is a ongoing battle, and claims more lives a year than 9/11 did. That's just one year. Don't compare the two please. I know you guys are all emotional about this, but think. |

I know you guys are all emotional about this, but think.
i think the reason that we take this seriously, is because of how recent it happened, and how football played a part in getting the entire society back on the track of "normal" when it happened. to compare it to wars and battles is ridiculous when this was basically an attack on our views and ideologies, and on us as an entire nation, all while being done right in the countries biggest city, visible to all. very different. |

Well, from what I've seen the last few seasons, I would not say they were too smart to fine players over this. Frankly the fines have been getting ridiculous over clean hits, players showing deceased players respect (Tilman) etc. Glad they relented on this. |

You sure about that? How do you explain the many other attacks Islamic extremists commited such as the Luxor Massacre (Primarily Swiss victims), The Qahantaniya bombings (Yazidi victims) etc, The Jordan Wedding Massacre (Jordanian Moslems). Was it their foreign policy? |

On the 10th Anniversary I think red/white/blue should be mandatory, It's the 10th Anniversary. Happened on American soil why not red/white/blue. Really if you want to mourn IMO no games should be played but if where going to play then red/white/blue it is. |

Yeah but with other fines it's always been about the individual. This is an issue that affects a lot of players over the entire league. The Commish will never be afraid to chuck a big fine towards one player, superstar or not. Lance Briggs isn't the only one who got special equipment and had plans to wear it. With all that being said, I like you and respect your opinions. Welcome to the board! |

I suppose if protecting ourselves from that is a Foriegn Policy faux pas then, yeah, we're 'just asking for trouble'..... <rolls_eyes>
You make a good point, as does nonniey above. Obviously it is mistaken to argue, as others have done, that the al Qaeda problem is ONLY a result of US foreign policy. That is overly simplistic. That said, there are reasons why al Qaeda is so fixated on attacking the USA rather than other "unIslamic" states such as, say for example, Uruguay. We have made foreign policy errors in the Muslim world going all the way back at least to the orchestrated overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran in 1953. It is not just that we stand in the way of al Qaeda's unrealistic dream of a pan-Islamic empire because we are so powerful. We also have made some mistakes. |

I agree 100% with you both. It is such a terrible dark day in USA history, that I get upset whenever the news covers it each year and when they write everything about it. It's just one of those things that is so bad that I dont think anybody should put it on TV again and again. It must be hard for the victims of 9/11 to gain any kind of peace when the media and everybody are ramming it down their throats. I might be in the minority but I think TV and retail stores are still milking 9/11 for any money that they can make off it. It makes me mad to go into a place like Wal-Mart or somewhere like that where they have millions of T-shirts on racks that say "9/11 we'll never forget" and the shirt is made in bangladesh or some other p.o.s. country a million miles away and none of the money even goes to a charity or anything like that for victims of 9/11. I remember also when Snyder put out the 9/11 Commemorative Redskins Hat that had a little flag on the side of it and it was like 40 bucks or something. I thought it was deplorable that he would try to make a buck off all those lost lives. I agree with patriotism, believe me, but it has its place. And I dont think on the anniversary of the nation's worst tragedy everybody should be all rah rah rah with the red white and blue. People should wear black, because it is a time of mourning, IMO. |

As to the red, white and blue, my thought is that it should be red, white and blue with a stripe of black - a reminder of the attack on us as a country, as a symbol of the unifying effect it had us as a country and as a remembrance & mourning for those who were targeted & died for no other reason than they were Americans. |

Having to see those attacks again and again are horrific, and whenever we are a month or so away from 9/11 you will see the shows on CNN, AnE, History Channel, Discovery, and so on that chronicle the day from every different perspective. We will never forget, and we don't need a reminder every year. This one is different as it is the 10 year anniversary. |

True but he's got an excellent side-point that is related to the thread. |
Re: NFL says players can wear red, white and blue on 9/11
I don't agree with sweeping the event under the rug like it never happened. This past week I've seen some fascinating programs about 9/11... I say keep them coming.
Unfortunately the commercial aspect comes with the territory. But it's more important that we keep a clear picture in our minds of what happened, and learn as much as we can about that day and those involved so we can remember and honor those that lost their lives that day. If someone wants to buy a t-shirt or hat so they can honor that day, so be it. |
