Rocky Returns
So I know we're already discussing this in two other threads but maybe it deserves its own thread.
Rocky McIntosh, to some surprise, is returning on a one year contract. What does this mean for Riley? For Henson? |
Re: Rocky Returns
He was horrible last year. Must mean they don't have much faith in Riley or Henson

Re: Rocky Returns
We shall see.. maybe the Tatupu visit didn't go so well
Henson actually broke the news from what I can tell |
Re: Rocky Returns
VERY shocked... Guess he feels he can be better Yr. 2 at ILB
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Henson is on the PUP list right maybe his injury is worse than expected
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Hey why not bring back Rocky at least we know he will play hard, solid lockerroom guy. It will only give us more depth at the positon. Besides we did not invest much in this resigning if our younger guys steps up and starts over Rocky. I think Lorenzo would be a good fit a the other ILB spot next to Fletch. he has the size like a former Steelers LB Levon Kirkland.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
I didn't see this coming. I just don't think he's cut out to play ILB in a 3-4. Maybe I'm just missing something here.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
he's a vet body, he missed a lot of higher quality ones, he's cheap, he's decent... no real downside, even if he's not a world beater.

True, but by all accounts Riley was looking good so far, and he looked good in limited playing time late last season, and he's been in this 3-4 just as long as Rocky has. I won't mind the Rocky deal as long as it's still an open competition for that other ILB spot. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Maybe it means we'll be seeing more 4-3 formations?
|
Re: Rocky Returns
One of our biggest weaknesses in years past has been depth. This adds depth.
Who knows what it means about Riley's progression, but having 2 guys going for that job increases the chances that one of them ends up being good at it. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Depth...the LB position/s are both thin and basically inexperienced except for Fletch. The plan could be to bring someone else in, but I'll take Rocky until we can do better.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Yea......depth is good.
Let the best man start. McIntosh isn't Wilbur Marshall but he's at least a half decent vet. |
Re: Rocky Returns
I've heard nothing but good things so far about Riley, he seems poised to hold down a starting job. With Henson on PUP perhaps this is just a depth move until he's ready to return.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Yeah I was looking forward to seeing what Riley could do as well. Hopefully this is still an open competition at ILB, if it is then I think this is a smart re-signing. If there was some sort of promise that he would start then I'm obviously not so happy with it.
I just hope this does not become a distraction if Riley beats him out, as Rocky will obviously want all the playing time he can get to showcase himself for his next contract. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Henson and Riley both have (at times) shown flashes of potential, I need to see more of them both in game situations before declaring either saviors at the ILB positions.
Henson flashed in preseason last year, but preseason is just that....preseason |
Re: Rocky Returns
Rocky is a terrible fit for this defense. I'd like to see Riley in there this year.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
I think Rocky will be there for depth, and the other starting ILB position is Riley's to lose.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Good news & definitely threadworthy since most of us expected him to be elsewhere. In a crowded market Rocky & Los both were likely surprised at how little interest there was in them.
Rocky obviously has ability but never seemed a good fit in the 3-4. Good depth as others mentioned, maybe he shows improvement. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Nothing wrong with a vet coming back. I really hope Riley/Henson beats him out as starter. Id like to see some of these young draft picks beat some vets out in camp and get into the starting line up to see what they can do. It would thrill me to see Riley in at ILB and Cook in as C. Developing drafted talent is pivotal in rebuilding

Re: Rocky Returns
when reading over rocky's wiki this morning i saw this, completely forgot what we gave up to get him
McIntosh was drafted in the second round (35th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. The Redskins traded a sixth round pick in 2006 and a second round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft to the New York Jets in order to swap second-round picks.[6] He had minor knee surgery on June 14, 2006,[7] and was signed to the Redskins on July 30, 2006
no wonder we are where we are  good to have him back for depth, good run stopper, pretty awful pass coverage, he seems to be a great character guy though side note from rocky's wiki he married his college gf 3 days before the draft :doh: |

Yeah thats what im thinking/hoping. |
Re: Rocky Returns
I've always liked Rocky but the 3-4 just wasn't for him last season. I'm really surprised.
He has talent, never played up to his potential though, but I was sure he'd be gone after the scheme switch. Hopefully he either catches on or comes off the bench. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Rocky is an example of how great measurables don't always translate to football skills. Even as a 4-3 OLB he struggled in pass coverage, despite having great speed & agility. If he can improve in his coverage, from an athletic standpoint he would be a good nickel LB in this defense.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Guys, it's not like we signed him to multi-years contract.. Met Rocky for an autograph session, he was definitely a good guy. Like Shanny said for all other positions, it's open competition! On other note, I guess I'm kinda surprised that Saints haven't make a push to sign him, due to the connection to Gregg Williams?

Couple that w/trades for Loyd & Duckett, signing of Arch & ARE. Just like w/Kelly, we weren't worried about his knee. Other teams were. |

Are they still together, are they happy, then who cares about the wedding date, it may have had special meaning, or maybe he knew that once drafted the work grind would really start. And mainly, I would be surprised if the gf wasn't the one who set the specific date. sorry, just seemed like a wholly irrelevant point, so I thought I could make a wholly irrelevant response. Glad football starts at 4!!! |
Re: Rocky Returns
I think it's still Riley's job, this gives us more depth with a player that already knows the system. Guess the market wasn't all that great for Rocky afterall.
|
Re: Rocky Returns
I won't be surprised if Rocky was cut by the end of preseason. This is just to push Riley. Any word on how the Tatupu visit went yesterday?
|
Re: Rocky Returns
Shanahan does not like making anyone feel complacent. Rocky might be "back", but as the dude brought in to scare the 1st teamers, not the dude who is a 1st teamer.

Depth does have a meaning... |
Re: Rocky Returns
I think it way too early to be giving the ILB job Riley or any other player.
Let it be earned in the preseason games against starting offensive lines. Not the second and third string lines. Has Riley been handed the starting position in camp? I have not seen that mentioned by any coach anywhere. I doubt the depth chart in Training camp will be the same as game 1 depth chart. I bet Rocky is being brought as insurance. Would not be surprised if he gets cut come September. |

He's playing with the first team d and is penciled in as the starter so far. |
Re: Rocky Returns
Well the key word is penciled. It's Riley's to lose

Pretty much. Anything's possible as of right now but in reality Riley's played well enough he's probably going to start barring some unforeseen setback. |

Hopefully he either catches on or comes off the bench.
He was never much good for the 4-3, in my opinion. Sorry -- but I've never been a fan of Rocky. I'm eager to hear what his fans point to as reason why he should stay, apart from the usual 'he's a good locker room guy' excuse. When you factor in the way Vinny and Gibbs tripped all over themselves to move up and trade picks to get him, the guy has been an absolute bum and personifies the mediocrity that has plagued this team for the past 5-10 years. I'm not bitching though -- if there's absolutely nobody else available and you need someone with a pulse to fill the position, fine. Obviously no other team gave to shakes and a doo about him. His career highlights could speak to that. As others have said, it wouldn't be a surprise if he's not even with the team on Sept. 11. In the meantime, I'll find a way to endure another preseason of his glaring non-existence on the field. |
Re: Rocky Returns
^ I agree. The guy had huge potential and upside out of Miami...he's big, fast (4.65 40 in college) and very athletic, but when it came to fundamentals...something went wrong. Great guy and COULD have been great, but it just never clicked for him. He was far better in the 4-3 years than last season though. I wouldn't call him a bust, just a disappointment.

Re: Rocky Returns
pretty low risk move here. we bring back a guy who has been with the franchise for a while on a 1 year deal who will at least provide depth and has started for us for the last several years. i like the move.
