Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
If he would have beat the Raiders (I still can't believe how bad they played), he would have 4 superbowls instead of 3. He's already the only coach to had ever win a SuperBowl with 3 different QB's. A feat, imo, that already makes Gibbs the greatest. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a Skins fan. Just about every great coach won SuperBowl with great QB's. Gibbs won with Theisman, Williams and Rypien. None of those guys will ever make the hall.
But anyway, back to the original question, if Gibbs would have won SB 18, would he be in the discussion with Lombardi, Shula, Noll and Walsh as the greatest coach of all time? |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
You mean he's not best? j/k. Is Shula really that much better than Gibbs?

No. But he's always considered one of the best. I believe the undefeated season has a lot to do with it. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Most certainly
|
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Obviously yes...undefeated in 4 SBs?
no question...I already think he is the best...Lombardi was pretty good too. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Eh 3 QB's and 3 RB's in 4 Super Bowl Wins doesn't have the same ring to it as 3 QB's and 3 different RB's in 3 Super Bowl victories.

Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Yes.

Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Too me he is the best ever. He won 3 SB with one good QB (Joey T.) and 2 mediocre QB's. His 1983-84 team set an NFL record at that time for most points ever scored in a season, 3X 1K yard receivers, etc. His best coaching years were not winning SB's, they were his last year on Gibbs I, almost beat the 49ers in SF in the playoffs with an injury decimated team and took the Redskins to the playoffs after the tragic death of Sean Taylor during Gibbs II. Bill Walsh gets all the accolades for running the Paul Brown offense. Joe Gibbs in my biased opinion was the best coach ever!!!!!! You can throw in NASCAR success and professional Racquetball career. A true WINNER !!!!!!!
By the way, Walsh won 3 SB's too. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
He's top 5 IMO.
|
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Gibbs 1 yes. Gibbs 2? nope.

And I guess we're talking retired coaches here. Because if Belichick wins it all again this year...

Forgot one more. Beat the Dallas Cowboys during the strike season while the Cowboys had 7 starters including stars Danny White, Tony Dorsett and Randy White. The reason Gibbs doesn't get the recognition, is cause he won 2 SB's during strike seasons. Noll, Walsh, Belichick have won 3 SB's with the same QB and the Patriots will not win the SB this year. |

He's already 3/4 in SB's. Even if he goes 3-5 I think people would still say he's better than Gibbs. I'm not even going to debate this one, as my knowledge of the Skins teams in the 80's is 1. Great offensive line 2. Great wideouts 3. Great run game some seasons? 4. Solid defense and qb's, and 5th. 3 SB trophies in 4 appearances. |

I agree with most of what you said. But how can you be sure the Pats won't win it this year? |

No one will ever do it with 3 QB's and RB's ever again. Knoll, Belicheck, Johnson, and Landry all won it with the same QB's. Parcells won with two different QB's and two different starting RB's but thats about as close as anyone will get. Though I must admit if Parcells hadn't jumped around so much trying to rebuild every cellar dweller he could get his hands on he easily could have been the undisputed greatest head coach ever. |

I know they look unbeatable right now, just watch. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
I think it's hard to compare different coaches from different eras. But I think Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh were the greatest during their time; before free agency took it's hold on the league. I tellya, watching the Hogs and those teams was a thing of beauty. If a team beat the Skins back then it was beause they were stocked with talent and extremely well coached. Oh, and RFK was one of the most feared places to play in the NFL. We knew that if there was a playoff game at RFK, it was pretty much a wrap. Gibbs would have players practicing in the cold weather, rain, sleet, snow...or whatever. When you think abou it, it's crazy how they pamper these guys today. Totally different league now.
Someone look up Gibbs' playoff record at RFK. I'm betting his winning percentage was somewhere in the high 700s percentile. I think when it's all said and done though, Belichick will go down as one of the greatest. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
Joe Gibbs is the greatest coach/human being in any profession ever.
Certainly becomes more understandable when you see how old school football results in guys that can't even go to the bathroom themselves or in some cases remember the names of their kids. I've seen guys that were career backups with obvious physical ailments weather it be a limp or the inability to keep their back straight. This game as much as we love it really does come with a high price for many who play it. |

After all, CP did have some "power" while Gibbs was here(refusing to play in preseason games) but he has been completely submissive under Shanahan. |

Agree, Gibbs 1 was very good, definitely top 5. One coach always overlooked in these discussions is Chuck Noll, he was 4 for 4 in his super bowls and his teams dominated the 70s. I think its hard not to have Noll in the top 3. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?

Sure Gibbs II was not anywhere near any "greatest" category, but when you look at this team now w/another proven winner running the show, it's clear to me that Gibbs II had a difficult task before him. Like Shan, he took over after a failed experiment. He righted the ship in terms of getting the players to play hard, though he couldn't change the front office culture. Looking back, I appreciate Gibbs II even more these days. He gave us the best 2 seasons we've had in a decade. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
He's already considered as one of the best.

X 2. However having a QB that can throw the ball like Brady doesn't hurt. But no question Hoodie is a great coach. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
I'd also mention Tom Landry in there. He was an innovator and he was one of the few coaches who called both the offense and the defense. Great football coach and a great football mind.

Agree. Gibbs is even on record as saying Landry was the best coach he ever faced. |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
The best? As with quarterbacks, these "TBE" discussions are really kind of pointless b/c it is so subjective and so many variables come into play.
Curly Lambeau. Coached for 27 years and won 6 championships between 1929 - 1944 George Halas. He revolutionized pro ball and, when the Packers weren't winning championships in the 30's & 40's, Halas was. Four between 1932 - 1941 and another, after a coaching hiatus, in '46. Paul Brown. Many would say that any "Best Ever" coaching discussion begins and ends with him. Three championships between 1950 -1962 (Plus 4 straight in the AAFC). Also, not just a winner but an innovator whose methods still are in play today. Lombardi. When your the best, you win the trophy named after him. I mean, come on, they named the damn trophy after him. Don Shula. Most wins ever. A perfect season (accomplished with his starting QB out for a significant part of the season), 2 SB Championships and 5 SB appearances (4 w/ Miami, 1 w/ Baltimore). Chuck Noll. 4 for 4 in the SB and a decade of dominance. (Choking as I say this) Landry. 28 years of coaching including making the playoffs 18 of 20 times between 1966 -1985. Innovator on offense & defense, 2 SB wins in 4 appearances. Bill Walsh. Brown's disciple also both a winner and innovator. He and Gibbs are clearly the 1A and 1B as to the "best coach of the 80's" (and addressing the initial question, had Gibbs beaten the Raiders, I think Gibbs would have been the clear "Best Coach of the 80's" with Walsh a very, very close 2nd). In the 90's who stands out? Nobody to me really, maybe Parcells. He may be in the discussion for "Top Ten" coaches, not sure he is part of the "Best Ever" discussion. Belichick. Learned at Parcells feet and upped the ante. Really after Walsh and Gibbs in the 80's and now Belichick, is there anyone really able to be in this discussion? Coaching careers seem much shorter. Fewer and fewer repeat SB champs as coach. In the 70's Shula, Noll & Landry repeated as SB Champs. In the 80's Walsh, Gibbs repeated. In the 90's, Johnson repeated but only coached 5 years. Shanahan won two and has longevity and a good record but seems to be lacking that certain something that would put him in the "Best Ever" category. I would have to say that, after the Gibbs/Walsh era, the only coach entering the "Best Ever" discussion would be Belichick. Still, that leaves quite a few who could easily qualify as "Best Ever". |

Probably true, but his will always be tainted....even if the cheating didn't directly contribute to the wins...there's always that cloud hanging over them. He'll be respected as a coach for sure. As a human? Not so much. Coach Gibbs is one of the best coaches as well as one of the best men period ever associated with the NFL. There's an easy classless vs. classy comparison with Bellichick/Gibbs. |

Sure. I mean who is Bill Walsh without Young and Montana? Who is Chuck Knoll without Bradshaw? Jimmy Johnson without Aikman? Ummm, Shanahan without Elway? All the coaching legends have great players. I think one thing that really stands out about Gibbs is winning three Super Bowls with three totally unspectacular quarterbacks. There's just something about the Patriot way. I mean, how often in today's pro sports world do you see guys taking less money to play somewhere? And the way everyone buys into his system, the way he brings along young players year after year... I love coach Gibbs, but in the free agent era, Belichick is far and away the best coach we've seen. IMO it's not even close. He's amazing. I don't care if he's a douche. All the haters can kiss his rings. I've always been a Tom Brady fan (doesn't hurt that I can't stand the Jets), and I'm pulling for them down the stretch. My mom is from right outside of Pittsburgh, so a big slice of my extended family are big Steelers fans. It would be great to see another Pats-Steelers AFC championship game. |

I think many people, myself included, thought Belichick was a decent coach with Cleveland and performed admirably under adverse conditions but that he was probably destined for a solid yet unspectacular NFL head coaching career, if that. What's he done is simply remarkable |

Even the great "SB loser" coaches like Bud Grant and Marv Levy had Tarkenton and Kelly who were awesome QBs for the duration of their long careers. It's either Gibbs or Shula IMO. And Shula should have won more having 2 HOF QBs during his career! Just imagine if Casserly had picked Brett Favre instead of Bobby Wilson in 91... |
Re: Would Joe Gibbs Be Considered The Greatest Coach If He Won SB 18?
I think that Lombardi will always be the ultimate measuring stick for NFL coaches. Gibbs would have been a small notch below with a victory in Super Bowl XVIII. That was such a great Redskins team, but everything that could have gone wrong did that game - blocked punt for a TD, Rocket Screen intercepted for a TD, Marcus Allen reversing field for a long TD run on a broken play. A complete nightmare.
