Favorite Places You Have Visited

In the spirit of saden's where do you want to visit thread, what about where you have already been? What's been your favorite?

My home.

I like to travel but the feeling I have the first night back in my own bed usually Trumps the vacation.

Charleston, Savannah and Key West. Three great towns, and I want to go back to each of them for different reasons.

Been to both when I lived in Hilton Head, awesome cities IMO as well.

New Orleans, hands down, but it helps that I lived there for a while so I know where to go/what I like to do.

Unfortunately I didn't get to stay at some of these places long enough or I was too young to really enjoy them, but these were my favorites:

St George's, Bermuda
Marco Island, FL
Key Largo, FL
Aspen/Snowmass, CO in September (I don't ski but I love the late summer/early fall there)
Yellowstone
Atlantis in the Bahamas

Seville, Spain and Istanbul, Turkey. There are very few things that I deem really beautiful in this world, Istanbul is one of them.

New Orleans was really impressive when I visited about 6 years ago. My favorite places to visit have been Vancouver and Argentina.

Re: Favorite Places You Have Visited

Munich. Best decent sized city I've ever been to, bar none as far as day to day living goes. Between Oktoberfest, Biergartens, Englischer Garten, tons of public transport, bike paths... just a very nice city.

La Maddalena, Italy. Lived there for 3 years, it's a tiny archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea just off the northern tip of Sardinia (Sardegna). Clear emerald water, lots of night life within 5 minutes walk and about 45 minutes from Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda. Also 5 minutes from Club Med on a nearby island and a wildlife preserve. Topless beaches full of smoking hot vacationing Italian girls... It's a good spot.

Reykjavik, Iceland. Lived there also for 3 years. (Go Navy, lol) The economy is in shambles right now, but it's a beautiful place to visit during the summer. Snowmobile rides across the glacier, bathing in hotsprings during the winter and tons of nightlife. Something like 75% of the Iceland's population lives in Reykjavik.

Rome, Italy. Obvious choice but hard to argue with. Best to go during late Spring before everyone goes on vacation and it gets unbearably hot. Countless things to do...

Re: Favorite Places You Have Visited

Well, my honeymoon in Aruba was amazing. I've also been to a lot of places in Europe, but the one that sticks out the most was Normandy, France. Point Du Hoc. I stood in a German bunker overlooking the beaches of the D-Day invasion. There were huge craters in the ground from American mortar fire. Man, my hair was standing on end. Greatest generation indeed.

Snorkeling in St. John in the USVI was really awesome.

Honestly though, one of my favorite places is pretty simple- my dad's place in Blowing Rock, NC. Up in the mountains, clean crisp air, so peaceful. Love it there.

And Siesta Key, Fl (where I got married) is great, too.

That's about it for me. I need to travel more.

+1 Munich is a great place to visit. If you ever get a chance to go, skip the Hofbrau house and head to the Andechs restaurant. Better beer, and no tourists. It's really close to the Marienplatz. Best glass of beer I have ever had. Ever.

I've never been, but I have plenty of friends who have. I hear it's fun for a day or two, but in general pretty dirty and overrated. Still, I'd go just to hit a coffee shop or two. :cool-smil

Agreed. I could live in Sevilla.

My favorite place, though, is Tibet, especially the Reting area. I could live there too.

I also like:
Jaipur and Haridwar, India
Kyoto, Japan
Pokhara, Nepal
Hua Hin, Thailand

Yeah I'm thinking it would be a fun place to visit for a day or two, on your way to or back from some place else.

I've been...it's a nice city. Lots of places to see include the red light district. Food there is meh. They speak English and are happy to speak to you. The chicks there are hot but not as hot as the Czech chicks. And of course, you can purchase 5 inch blunts for cheap...be sure to pace yourself otherwise you will lost 2 days of your life if you overdo it.

+1, lived there 9 months, but it was great. I definitely enjoy that city.

Austrian and Swiss Alps,
Berchtesgaden, Hitler's hideaway. Fascinating with the history, and scenery
Vancouver, only got to spend a day, but was beautiful.

Nearly every drive across the US is an also ran. I love driving across the United States and seeing the country flow by. Nowadays alot looks the same, but is still awesome. One Christmas I was driving out from Md to Colorado Christmas eve, and in a span of 36 hours, I had driven through, MD, PA, WV, OH, Indiana,Illinois, Missouri, Kansas (Ugh) and Colo, AND Stopped at a WalMart in each state picking up Christmas presents along the way LOL.

September is a good time to visit. The cold and hardcore wind won't be in full swing yet. I assume you're going to Reykjavik... how long are you staying for?

Re: Favorite Places You Have Visited

I would say Thailand was my favorite place to visit. Lots to see, very inexpensive, and lots of underground kick boxing going on. Great food, lovely ladies, and the beaches are gorgeous. Close second would be Singapore. Not so much because it's a party town, but everything is so damn clean and neat there. So obviously when you get hammered there, you feel like you're getting away with something.

The US...hmmm, I would say New York has to be funnest (is that a word) city behind Vegas. But I'll take NY over Vegas simply because it's fun in a normal kind a way. Vegas is fun on steroids. Oh, New Orleans is in a class by itself really. Just good old fun 24/7.

I'm actually only going for a weekend, next time I'll go longer. I'm really hoping I see the Aurora Borealis. Always been a wish of mine to see that, and if I get to share that moment with my wife...I might just cry double rainbow style

Definitely hit up the Blue Lagoon and the Pearl, a little touristy but something you should do if you're there. There's also some great cafes and bakeries in Reykjavik. Sandholt was my favorite and it's downtown on the main shopping street/walking mall. I'm guessing if you need some supplies you'd want to stop by this place... and that should put you in the mood for this..

Yes, and the best place to get that sort of recreational substance is a place called "The Grey Area." Its a great shop with fair prices. There is a great Indonesian place across the street too....

Re: Favorite Places You Have Visited

Nice thread.

US: NYC, Texas hill country (Austin included), Great Smokey Mts., coast of Maine, Tombstone, AZ, the Rocky mts, NOLA, ole DC.

Elsewhere: Paris, Venice, Rome, London--I love the big old cities. Paris is probably my favorite, but Venice is from another world. The Croatian coast (Dubrovnik) is amazing. Edinburgh--a great town. Amsterdam: go a to a coffee shop, get some nice hash, light up, and then walk around all day and night. Go in the summer when it stays light real late. Last but certainly not least: the entire country of IRELAND! What an amazing place. We spent 3 weeks there on our honeymoon and it was not long enough.

(I most definitely left a bunch of places off my list--there's so many cool places here and abroad.)

Everywhere I've been in my life has been on the East Coast of the US, but so far I've really enjoyed going to NYC, going to Miami and hitting up the Florida Keys while I was down there too. Those are about the only places I've visited that I really enjoyed.

My wife and I went on a ten-day vacation to Israel in June. We simply rented a car and drove from one end to the next, and it was just incredible. The Dead Sea is one strange experience.

Monument Valley and the Arches National Park, both in the southwest, are among my favorite visited places. My wife and I honeymooned in the mountains in Peru (up to Macchu Picchu), which was also a pretty stunning trip. I also loved the three days I spent a few years ago in Memphis. What a great town. In terms of sport venues, I'm very glad I got to see a game in the old Tiger Stadium before the team moved out and the city tore it down.
