Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
It looks like we have interviewed Jerry Gray again and Jim Haslett as well.. Romeo Crennel would be a nice addition as well. I figured we would be switching to a 3-4 scheme. What does this mean for Albert Haynesworth?

re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I wonder if McClain would be option at #4 pick if we switch to the 3-4
|
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
It means Haynesworth would probably be a DE. I think it's a terrible idea to switch to a 3-4.
|
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Agreed, where are these linebackers going to come from. Fletcher is a beast as a 4-3 Mike. In the case that we did switch defenses I would personally like to see a 46. A 3-4 requires a huge commitment, Green Bay was able to make that change quickly because they successfully brought in two highly talented rookies that were perfect fits as well as one of the best 3-4 coordinators in the league. We don't have the luxury to spend picks on defense and the free agent market is full of fruit thats close to it's due date.
I wouldn't be opposed to a 3-4 hybrid where we gradually transitioned but I don't want to see a full commitment until we get the offense sorted out. |
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I found this in a St Louis newspaper when Haslett was being considered for Rams job
Haslett has used a number of different defensive schemes. He was part of Pittsburgh’s staff in the 1990s that used a 3-4, but he has used a lot of 4-3 since then, incorporating a lot of the blitz emphasis that the Steelers used. I dont think he means we change to a 3-4 like Florio says. |
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I would rather have a 4-3 because AH is a DOMINANT DT.. If we were to move him to DE, who know's if he would fit or not.. ON the flipside, we could use RAK just like Dallas uses Ware! Looks like Haslett will be the guy.

He could still be a dominant DE in a 3-4 in the Richard Seymour mold, twice Seymour has matched Haynesworth career high in sacks (8). I'm not sold though on Orakpo as a stand up OLB. I think he does better when he comes out of his 4 point stance that you see when he lines up at DE. |
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
why wouldn't AH be a nose tackle in a 3-4 system???
|
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I want to know what what Shanny was evaluating when he decided that he did want to switch. To me we don't have the personnel to run this scheme.
|
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
We would still need a NT, so assuming we could get a trade partner to trade down in the first we could feasibly draft Terrance Cody(Alabama), Brandon Spikes(Florida), and then select someone like Charles Brown(USC) with our first three picks. I guess this would please the Jason Campbell fans.

No, we don't have personnel for the 3-4. I am not sure that it is certain that we are switching to a 3-4. Lots of rumors but nothing solid has been said, to my knowledge. |

i agree, it seems like he could be.....and also given the fact that both RAK and carter are speed guys AND both are familiar with the linebacker position. (carter in san fran) I think it could work well. |

Carter was a terrible LB in the 3-4 he played in San Fran. |

Carter was a disaster when he played in the 3-4. |

Carter did not work out well as a 3-4 linebacker in San Fran. |

Just a guess but I'm assuming a 4pm presser tomorrow |

The Reason Carter Left San Fran, Is Because He Didn't Fit Mike Nolans 3-4 Scheme As An OLB, San Fran Wouldn't Resign Him, And Now He's With Us. |
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
so Haslett is a done deal?

re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I like the 3-4, but not with these players!
|
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I'm not sure about the switch with our current personnel but as a scheme I prefer the 3-4 to the 4-3. We've got some pieces that could work (Jarmon, Orakpo, Haynesworth, Blades, McIntosh, Montgomery, Landry) and some that don't fit (Carter, Fletcher) so it's going to be a transition.
I won't be surprised to see us shop Carter for a draft pick since he's not a fit in the 3-4 and he'd bring value. |

also london fletcher, our best linebacker would get his ass kicked in a 3-4 scheme, i say keep the 4-3 but go back to the gregg williams style

LOL. I see your username and all I can think of is [YT]OI7a-dSpKf4[/YT] |
re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
want's?
Considering our D-line, although talented, is aging. Griffin, Carter, Wynn... If we keep Rak on the line and not at LB, I like the move. Haynesworth can handle the middle better than anyone. We'll need to add a lot of LB depth though. |

I'm pretty sure that he cound transition from 4-3 MLB to 3-4 ILB. What makes you think he would get his ass kicked? The guy still has excellent speed, and hits like a ton of bricks.

Inside LB's in the 3-4 don't get the protection from guards like they do in the 4-3, so smaller lb's are not usually what you want there. But Fletch IS a beast so...who knows? |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I have no doubts that Fletcher can excel in any system. The rest of the LB corps are what we should be concerned about. Fletcher, Blades, McIntosh could be fine, but where's the other LB coming from? Possibly Chris Wilson, hopefully not Orakpo at LB. Then depth?
At this time, our roster is better suited for 4-3, but that could change. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I think in a 3-4, Orakpo definitely plays LB. They would want to use him like Ware.
|

Yeah I agree, Rak has 3-4 OLB written all over him. |

yeah, and he would probably rush the passer more than he did overall this year, while only dropping into coverage a few times a game. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
I just want to point out that a 3-4 doesn't have to have a huge nose tackle or huge defensive lineman for that matter. When Wade Phillips was in Atlanta running the 3-4 he was using Andre Carter type players at DE and stressing gap penetration. Hopefully they're thinking of using a 3-4 with an emphasis on gap penetration.

Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
Let's see what Haslett says at his press conference
Until we hear what he has to say the title of this thread is misleading. The title leads one to believe a decision has already been made, I haven't heard that as fact coming from either Shanahan or Haslett who we haven't heard anything from yet. |
Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
All i heard from alot of posters on here last yr was how they wish the Skins D was more like the Steelers..... Well here it comes and now you will see first hand what it takes to make a defense of that caliber. How many 1st rounders have the Steelers used on their defense? Cody,McClain and Spikes are names we could be seeing on draft day. Oline is a need but for the 3-4 to work you MUST have a front 3 who can tie up blockers. if anything it will be interesting.

Re: Shanahan wants a 3-4 Defense
How bout keepin an eye on NE and A Thomas? he can play OLB opposite of RAK.
